Following on from the Year 7 project described in the last issue, pupils at Ballakermeen High School are introduced to a systems approach to electronics with an individual project exercise. Ballakermeen High School is a mixed 11-18 comprehensive of 1200 pupils on the Isle of Man.

This article describes a simple and inexpensive circuit that may be used in conjunction with any microcomputer that has an eight bit port, whose lines can be configured as outputs or inputs, to convert it into an auto-ranging digital frequency meter.The following notes describe its operation when used with the Acorn Master (or Model B with a 2 MHz VIA chip) computer. The USER port is ideal for this application, which requires access to five output lines and three input lines. The circuit is useful in the school or college where an auto-ranging purpose-built meter is prohibitively expensive although desirable. It has been designed to measure frequencies over the range of 2 Hz to 5 MHz with an accuracy of about 0.05%, and it has very adequate over-voltage input protection, with the ability to handle input signals within the range of +70V to −70V.

‘Scientists are convinced that…’ No, it wasn't part of a cosmetics commercial, but a much repeated phrase in a book for youngsters by a very well known science journalist, warning of the dangers of global warming and the Greenhouse Effect. I was irritated by the book's dogmatic approach, so much so that an interview involving myself and the author was arranged for the BBC World Service—but more of that later.

This article follows Part 1 published in the Spring issue of Electronics Education and includes material from a sample SATIS 8-14 unit.The SATIS (Science & Technology in Society) project supplies teachers of GCSE and ‘A’ level science with excellent teaching support material. Initiated by the Association for Science Education, SATIS materials are sponsored and are aimed at putting science and technology into context. Many of these contexts are social, industrial, agricultural or in health and safety.The project has been extended to produce material for Key Stages 2 and 3 (8-14). SATIS does not provide ‘off-the-peg’ or ‘instant-handout’ material; rather, it offers teachers sources, ideas and tried techniques to enliven their own teaching with real examples and situations.SATIS materials are a shelf resource, photocopiable and flexible. Although they do not aim to deliver the National Curriculum for science and technology, they will enrich work in both. Units are lively and interactive; they stimulate group work and cooperation, and are applicable across the curriculum. Many teachers ‘cut and paste’ SATIS materials to suit their pupils.The units in SATIS 8-14 are presented in parts. Each part is a single activity and can be tackled alone or used to supplement other activities. The units have both radio/audiotape and television/videotape components and a SATIS disc, to enrich and extend the printed materials.
