摘要:
In 1973 Wendy Knowles*and I began designing an approach to language improvement for mentally retarded children. By 1977 it had become the Derbyshire Language Scheme (DLS), a system of language assessment and related teaching activities. The DLS had been implemented at ESN(S) schools and proved to be equally useful in ESN(M) schools and pre‐school diagnostic unit

摘要:
The title is deliberately paradoxical. The vast majority of parents in nearly all cultures have been, are, and will be intimately involved in developing their children's communication skills. It is they who provide children with an impetus to communicate and a milieu which is highly conducive to learning. And they are mostly successful. Their children do learn to communicate even by our most sophisticated method, language. Parents achieve this without any training, with little prior experience and in the absence of any specialist help.

摘要:
There are a number of groups of children who present particularly difficult educational problems because, due to hearing loss, neurological impairment or psychiatric disorder, they are unable to develop language in the normal way. One such group comprises children with aphasia.

摘要:
For the child or young person diagnosed as having a ‘communication disorder’, his linguistic disabilities almost always result in major social and educational difficulties. We are all aware of the seriousness of these difficulties, and have probably found that they present us with problems almost as daunting as those which face the child. Our primary concern is the management of the person with the disorder. Put in very broad terms, our aim is to remediate, facilitate and habilitate an individual's communicative performance, so that he is enabled both to achieve efficient social interaction and to realize his intellectual potential. However, in order to devise an appropriate management policy that is to change and improve communicative performance, one must have detailed knowledge of the present status of this behaviour and information about relevant related abilities. Evaluation is therefore a very necessary prerequisite to managem
