Within the realm of financial institutions, the Canadian trust industry has recently developed into a set of institutions that now challenges the domestic hegemony of the banks. At the same time, this industry has become integrated into several of the dominant Canadian conglomerates, thus blurring the traditional division between financial and non‐financial institutions. This paper begins by analysing the recent transformation in the structure of the Canadian trust industry. It then integrates this into an analysis of similar structural transformations within the Canadian economy at large. It concludes by suggesting the social signi

The paper examines the status attainment process in relation to four labour market perspectives: 1/ structural unemployment; 2/ the business cycle; 3/ queuing theory; and 4/ segmentation theory. We evaluate their implications by developing a status attainment model which varies along three dimensions ‐ time, socio‐economic background and sex ‐and by testing the model on a heterogeneous sample of individuals who entered their first full‐time job between 1961 and 1972. The results support our structural unemployment and segmentation‐theoretic hypotheses, are partially supportive of our business cycle hypothesis and are ambiguous with respect to our queuing hypothesis. The discussion relates various labour market trends over the 1961–72 period to the status attainment process. In addition, we emphasize that the characteristics of individuals (particularly of women) entering into their first full‐time job are time‐dependent, and that this has implications for the understanding of status attainment an

This paper, based on archival data, is a study of pro‐change leadership in a social movement: namely, the ecumenical movement within the Canadian Protestant churches during the first quarter of this century which succeeded in merging several denominations into the United Church of Canada. First, the structure of the leadership is traced from a founding group to a dispersed and enlarged network, then the leadership is displayed in action at various levels of the church and society. Finally, the dissident activity of several of the original group

It also points to the importance of rethinking conventional approaches to rural culture by recognizing the pervasive influence of a history of domination. The arguments draw upon the results of field work conducted in northern New Zealand and central Albert

Functionalist theory has provided two distinct interpretations of the implications which crime has for patterns of social order. The first which is derived from the writings of Durkheim and Mead emphasizes the functional character of these implications while more recent viewpoints have stressed their divisive nature. An attempt is made to reconcile these positions through an examination of coping strategies that suggest definitions of crime as a private trouble and as a public issue. Employing data from the Vancouver Urban Survey, the interrelationship between these dimensions is examined and an attempt is made to describe the publics for whom particular definitions of the crime problem are salient. The analysis suggests that both definitions may be correct but for different segments of the population. This resolution, it is argued, may require a reconsideration of the basic assumptions upon which function

The paper examines the impact, in an Ottawa elementary school of attempts to change traditional conceptions of gender. Student drawings, secured before and after a seven year consciousness‐raising program, were utilized as indicators of children's gendered subjectivity. The results point to a strengthening of gender differentiation over the seven years, raising the question of the school's efficacy in promotin
