Critical sociology, as discussed in this article, is not only devoted to the critique of existing societies, but also to the advent of those which could and should develop. In addition, it is more interested in practices than in theories, more in ‘praxis’ than in practices, more in the establisher than in the established. The article, which has been translated into English, is designed to serve as a conceptual framework for an empirical study; from it, one can deduce hypotheses which can be proved or disproved. The article does not aim at pure scholarship, but at formulating certain propositions which could guide the researcher in the collection and interpretation of data. Three monographs will be published shortly and a fifth publication will effect a critique, from the inside, of the conceptual f

This study of the 1974 graduating class of Ontario law schools examines the mobility structure of the Ontario legal profession. A series of background characteristics (e.g., demographic variables, parental occupation, schooling) are examined to determine their influence upon career outcomes (e.g., income, area of specialization, employment sector). Divergent routes are evident for women and some minorities. Placement into elite law firms (as defined by Clement) is caref

This paper, a treatment of the pre‐coronation passage of Elizabeth i, seeks to adopt and to criticize the ‘politics as theatre’ metaphor recently used by Geertz and other students of the symbolism of political affairs. I seek to show where and how the pre‐coronation passage is illuminated by this metaphor, and where its significance is made obscure. It is suggested, on this basis, that the metaphor is improved as an analytic device when the notion of ‘rehear

One important facet of the family literature has been to study the relationships between parental marital status and various aspects of children's life situation. This research too often has been carried out on clinical ‘samples’ of parents and/or children; moreover, the emphasis has been either on widowed OY on divorced families. This literature points to disadvantages for children from either types of dissolved unions. Focusing on school success and expectations, we surveyed a large and representative sample of all Montrd francophone teenagers in school (public and private) in the winter of 1977. We found that adolescents from separated / divorced families did less well in school, liked school less, and expected to abandon school earlier the adolescents from legally intact families. Adolescents from widowed families generally occupied an intermediate position. The results are discussed within a framework of psycho‐socio‐economic disadvantages, and suggestions are offered concerning various potentia

Structural explanations of fertility differentials, long held sacred in demography, now appear insufficient as family size converges and more complete theoretical frameworks appear. Using a sample of women interviewed in a fertility survey in Edmonton, Alberta, we examine the explanatory potential of three alternative explanations of variation in family size expectations: 1 / the structural approach focusing on inter‐group differences; 2 / the economic utilities approach which sees fertility as the result of a decision constrained by economic preference; and 3 / the sociological utilities approach which views fertility in terms of competing role preferences and values. It is hypothesized that the structural approach will be exceeded in explanatory power by the other two ‘choice’‐involving approaches and that the sociological model will exceed the economic mod

In Van Den Berg and Smith's comment that precedes this reply, I note their concession to the major conclusions of my 1982 comment. They no longer directly challenge my conclusions 1 / that there has been a general increase in the exploitation of labour by capital in the twentieth century despite fluctuations from decade to decade, nor 2 I the positive correlations between the rate of surplus value and strikes, especially between 1945 and 1966. Instead, they concentrate on minor methodological points that have little bearing on the thrust of my research. In this lies their major weakness: by narrowly focusing on a partial ‘critique’ of my critique of their ‘critique’ of my original research (Cuneo, 1978), Van Den Berg and Smith lose sight of the original research hypotheses, and end up trying to defend errors committed in their original com
