摘要:
A valuable stratigraphic marker bed was found to underlie, at shallow depths, the intertidal sandy sediments of the lower Tairua estuary. It consists of saw dust, wood ehip and sawn plank debris derived from the kauri log milling that took place on the estuary shores between 1864 and 1909. Dating the marker bed permits ealculation of spatial variation in net sedimentation rates of 2 to 22 mm yr-1, averaging 6 mm yr-1, since about 1933. This equates with the deposition of about 10,000 ± 2,000 m yr-1of sand in the lower estuary between 1933 and 1984. Similar stratigraphic markers derived from logging activities may be found in other New Zealand estuaries, and could be used for the determination of historical sedimentation rates.

摘要:
Lingulaoccurs in New Zealand in rocks of Middle-Upper Triassic age, Kaihikuan local stage.Lingula aorakin. sp. is described from Kaihikuan strata of Hokonui Hills, Southland. It also occurs in north Otago and Canterbury where it is found in transitional marine beds which include plant beds. Distribution and palaeoecology are discussed.

摘要:
Lingulaoccurs in the New Zealand Cenozoic in horizons of Paleocene, Eocene, Oligocene and Miocene age. The geographie and stratigraphie distribution ofLingula waikatoensisPenseler through the Tertiary is described, and the significance of the genus as an indicator of paleoshorelines and paleodimate is discussed.

摘要:
An infestation of the endangered New Zealand short-tailed bat,Mystacina tuberculataGray 1843, by a new species of mesostigmatid mite is described, together with the mite is life history. All six bats of a zoo colony died of septicaemia in circumstances which strongly suggest that the presence of the mites or their feeding caused a severe irritation, wh ich incited the bats to lacerate their own ears. These self-inflicted injuries may have allowed microorganisms, growing on extravasated fluids, to enter the lesions and kill the bats. This type of self-inflicted injury has apparently not been reported before for wild or captive Chiroptera.

摘要:
Four species of acrotretide brachiopods are present in the Tertiary and Recent of New Zealand.Disciniscasp. is reported from Paleogene rocks on the Chatham Islands. Two new localities for the living deepwater cosmopolitan speciesPelagodiscus atlanticus(King) from the Tasman Basin are recorded. The Recent speciesNeocrania huttoni(Thomson) is shown to be widespread in the Three Kings-Hauraki Gulf-Bay of Plenty region. One fossil species,N. chathamensis(Allan), occurs in rocks of Eocene — Oligocene age near Oamaru, and in Paleogene and Pliocene horizons on the Chatham Islands. The systematics, distribution, and some aspects of the ecology of these species are discussed.

摘要:
Four species ofCymatium (Turritriton)have very similar spiral sculpture, the primary cords each bearing three high, narrow riblets. The earliest isC. domingense(Gabb) from late early Miocene to early Pliocene rocks of the Dominican Republic. The other three species seem likely to be descended fromC. domingense, and either have no fossil record, or are known as fossils only from the late Pliocene or Pleistocene.C. labiosum(Wood) occurs now in the Indo-West Pacific, the western Atlantic, and (rarely) West Africa;C. gibbosum(Broderip) in the Panamic province of tropical western America; andC. kobelti(von Maltzan) in West Africa, and newly recorded from the western Mediterranean Sea.C. gibbosumandC. kobeltiare closely similar si ster species, differing by little other than protoconch shape and coloration.
