AbstractThe phase behaviour of five distillation fractions of a Fischer‐Tropsch wax were investigated at pressures up to 40 kbar by means of differential thermal analysis. The approximate constancy in the number of significant components (i.e. greater than 5% by wt.) in each wax fraction is probably responsible for them appearing to behave as a series. Similarity of the phase diagrams of the individual wax fractions gave rise to the construction of a ‘master’ phase diagram. AbstractMethyl and ethyl lactates have been synthesised under pressure from acetaldehyde, carbon monoxide and methyl or ethyl alcohol with various supported nickel, cobalt and iron catalysts. Under the optimum conditions, in the presence of nickel iodide supported on silica gel (Ni:SiO2= 50:50), the maximum yields of methyl lactate and by‐product lactic acid were 20.7% and 15.2% respectively, whereas the maximum yields of ethyl lactate and lactic acid were 12.6% and 12.3% respectively (all on the input acetaldehyde basis

AbstractThe mechanical behaviour of waterproofing membrane systems composed of one or more layers of bituminous sheeting fully bonded together to form an integral layer has been studied and a theory has been evolved which allows membrane stresses and strains to be calculated as a function of the mechanical properties of the constituent materials and of the associated substrate movement. Allowance is made for the visco‐elastic effects of bitumen.It is concluded that the ability of membranes to accommodate substrate movement largely depends on the mechanical properties of the base fabrics used to reinforce bituminous sheetings, and this has been confirmed in controlled experimental work.The order of substrate movement that may be tolerated by a single‐layer fully bonded system was calculated for a number of conditions. AbstractThe vapour pressures of six liquids have been measured in the approximate range 0.05 to 200 torr and correlated with that of benzene by a method published in an earlier paper. The relationship so obtained which is linear for non‐associated substances and is valid from critical conditions to a vapour pressure at least as low as 0.1 torr presents a reliable method of extrapolation of vapour pressure data.
