摘要:
AbstractThe mechanism of the absorption of carbon monoxide by an aqueous solution of cuprous ammonium lactate is considered, and equilibrium isotherms and an equation relating temperature and the equilibrium constant are established.Pilot plant studies give values forHOLandKLa, and the effects of gas and liquid flow rates on mass transfer coefficients are determined.The solution is viscous and has a surface tension which differs considerably from that of water. The viability of published equations for predicting coefficients and interfacial area are appraised.

AbstractA wetted‐wall column is used to determine the values ofHOLandKLa for the flow of a viscous cuprous ammonium lactate solution countercurrent to a H2/CO gas mixture.Kapitsa's equation is used to calculate the value of the interfacial area on the rippled liquid surface. Values ofKLare calculated and the effects of liquid and gas flow onKLare determined. It is shown that there is a significant effect of gas flow even though the absorption is liquid film controlled.With a viscous solution the wetted‐wall column can simulate conditions in a packing. The results from the wetted‐wall and packed towers are examined by a new method to obtain the degree of wetting of the packing while mass transfer is occu

AbstractThe conditions under which electrophoretic deposits can be formed from suspensions of a number of metallic and non‐metallic materials have been established, and the zeta‐potentials of the materials have been measured. Calculated values of the minimum field‐strength required to overcome the repulsion between the particles show agreement with the observed values for some materials. For other materials, particularly metallic powders, it is not possible to apply sufficient force by the field to overcome this repulsion. Addition of a suitable amount of certain electrolytes, for example 10−3M‐aluminium chloride, results in very adherent deposits. Under these conditions the electrolytic reaction produces a binder, such as a polymeric hydroxide, at the cathode, so that the adhesion of the deposit no longer depends only on the London‐van der Waals attractive forces between the origina

AbstractThe size distribution is determined of UO2particles with a specific surface area of 1 to 6 m.2/g., prepared from U3O8by reduction in hydrogen and calcined at temperatures between 610° and 1000°. of the U3O8and UO2, 90% by wt. was within the particle size range 4 to 90μ. The narrowest spectrum —4—56μ—was found in the product of calcination at 700° which was—in comparison with all the other samples—easiest to sinter. After being pressed at 2.5 tons/cm.2and sintered at 1600° the pellets attained a density of 96% of the theoretical.
