AbstractEvidence is given for the existence of a compound known as nitropersulphuric acid. This is claimed to be present in acid obtained from a chamber plant which enables oxidation of sulphur dioxide to take place in the liquid phase, and without the liberation of nitrous gases. Analytical tests are outlined which prove the existence of such a compound.

AbstractThe cementing material of a commercial light‐weight sand‐lime block has been shown by analytical andX‐rayinvestigations to be calcium silicate hydrate (I) (for nomenclature see Taylor, 1950), of approximate composition 1.28CaO, SiO2, 2.05H2O. TheX‐raypowder data are in close agreement with those of laboratory preparations. This result shows that calcium silicate hydrate (I) is capable of being formed under the conditions appertaining in a paste. It therefore appears possible that the cementing agents of sand‐lime bricks in general, and also of hydrated Portland cement, are composed of the same, or a very similar

AbstractMixtures of solid inorganic oxidants (potassium chlorate, perchlorate and nitrate) with various combustible substances (carbon black, paraffin wax, starch and asphalt), when heated at relatively low temperatures, undergo an exothermal pre‐ignition reaction. AbstractA method of plotting the logarithms of the activity coefficients of each component in a ternary system is described which takes advantage of information on the three binary systems. For a ternary system A, B, C the values of log γA againstxc, log γB againstxc, and log γc againstxB are plotted for a constant value ofxB/(xB+xc), wherexA,xBandxcare the mole fractions of the three components in the liquid. If the whole ternary diagram is to be explored these plots are carried out for a series of values of the parameterxB/(xB+xc). A method of interpolation is described and thermodynamic tests for the consistency of the resulting plots are developed. The use of the procedure is illustrated by application to published information on the system acetonitrile (methyl cyanide)‐trichloroethylene

AbstractThe desirability of adopting some common method of plotting vapour‐liquid equilibrium data on systems with more than one liquid phase is stressed and attention is drawn to the lack of agreement in published literature on the theoretical treatment of such systems. The conditions under which both the Gibbs‐Duhem equation and the expression connecting the excess free energy of mixing with the activity coefficients apply to systems with more than one liquid phase are critically examined. As a result of this theoretical study a method of plotting equilibrium data on systems with two or more liquid phases is recommended and thermodynamic tests for the consistency of experimental data are presented. The method of plotting experimental results and applying tests for consistency are illustrated by an analysis of the published data on the systemn‐butanol

AbstractThe reaction between monazite, chlorine and carbon has been investigated at temperatures above the melting point of the mixed lanthanon chlorides. Conditions have been established, on a laboratory scale, for recovering over 85% of the lanthanons as anhydrous chlorides. At temperatures over 900° c. these are virtually free of thorium chloride and phosphorus compounds, which volatilize together with impurities such as iron, aluminium, chromium and titanium chlorides.The nature of the volatile products has been examined and particular reference is made to the evolution of elementary phosphorus. AbstractIt is shown that the high‐solubility layer previously demonstrated (Clelland, Cumming&Ritchie, 1951) on silicious dust‐particle surfaces is not a surface layer of hydrated silica; and evidence is adduced that it is a vitreous silica layer of the Beilby type, formed during the production of the dust by crushing and grinding. An important part of the evidence is the demonstration that prolonged grinding of quartz leads to a reduction in density. This reduction is attributed to partial conversion of the dust particles to vitreous silica: no conversion to other crystalline modifications of silica could be detected. Further, when the high‐solubility layer has been removed from silicious dust particles by solvents, it can be regenerated by a purely mechanical polishing process. AbstractAqueous formamide (20%) was found to exert a specific effect on the germicidal power of formic and acetic acids and also of ammonium hydroxide: bactericidal action against Bacr. aerogenes was increased six‐ to twelve‐fold.
