AbstractFlies of Genus Platypalpus in cereal crops as predatory insects little noticed hithertoSweep net and blue‐trap catches carried out in cereal crops of the Halle district in 1985 proved the presence of predatory flies of the genusPlatypalpus(Empididae) in great number. The identification of altogether 6506 insects caught in winter wheat, winter and summer barley revealed 12 different species. Most frequently were foundPlatypalpus articulatoidesFrey,P. pallidicornisColl.,P. articulatusMacq. andP. pictitarsisBeck. High population densities were also recorded forP. infectusColl.,P. pallidiventrisMeig. andP. minutusMeig. Of faunistic interest might be the identification of totally 18 insects of the speciesP. excisusBeck.The composition of the insect species settling on the studied crops was very uniform, whereas the dominance structure varied significantly. Proof could be furnished for the presence ofPlatypalpusin cereal crops nearly throughout the whole growth period.Investigations and tests on the feeding behaviour of the predators demonstrated, that variousPlatypalpusspecies feed preferably onOscinella frit(L.), wheat midges (Contarinia tritici[Kirby] andSitodiplosis mosellana[Géhin]). The importance of the predatory flies of this genus as regulators of insect populations in grain crops is discussed and available literature is analysed.ZusammenfassungDie räuberisch lebenden Fliegen der GattungPlatypalpus(Empididae) waren in Kescher‐ und Blauschalenfängen in Getreidefeldern des Bezirkes Halte im Jahre 1985 zahlreich vertreten.Die Determination der insgesamt 6506 in Winterweizen‐, Wintergerste‐ und Sommergerstebeständen erbeuteten Individuen erbrachte 12 verschiedene Spezies. AbstractDendroctonus terebransoften cohabits the same host tree withD. frontalis. D. terebransproduces and responds to some of the same pheromones produced byD. frontalis. D. terebranswas significantly more responsive at the antennal olfactory level to theD. frontalispheromones frontalin,endo‐brevicomin andtrans‐verbenol than to southern pine turpentine. In behavioral assays in the laboratory, frontalin was significantly more attractive to males andendo‐brevicomin was significantly more attractive to females. Differential response between males and females was not found fortrans‐verbenol and turpentine. However, in field bioassays both males and females were unresponsive to the pheromones unless turpentine was released at high rates in combination with the pheromones. Turpentine had a distinct synergistic effect on the attractiveness of frontalin to males andendo‐brevicomin to females. Chemical analysis ofD. terebrans‐released volatiles revealed that males produceendo‐brevicomin,exo‐brevicomin,trans‐verbenol and myrtenol. Females produce and release frontalin,trans‐verbenol and myrtenol. The compounds appear to have a significant role in the intra‐ and interspecific olfactory communication of the species.ZusammenfassungZum Kairomon‐Pheromon‐System des Schwarzen Riesenbastkäfers, Dendroctonus terebrans (Ol.)Der Schwarze Riesenbastkäfer,Dendroctonus terebrans, besiedelt oft dieselben Wirtsbäume wieD. frontalis. Hierbei werden beide Arten von den gleichen Duftstoffen angelockt. Im Elektro‐Antennogramm zeigtD. terebransstärkere Reaktionen auf dieD. frontalisPheromoneendo‐Brevicomin undtrans‐Verbenol als auf die Terpene des Wirtsbaumes. Im Labortest und in Freilandversuchen lockte Frontalin signifikant mehr Männchen an,endo‐Brevicomin mehr Weibchen. Beide Geschlechter reagierten jedoch im Freiland nur dann auf die bicyclischen Acetale, wenn sie zusammen mit hohen Konzentrationen von Terpentin ausgebracht wurden. Das Terpentin hatte einen deutlichen synergistischen Effekt auf die Lockwirkung der Pheromone. Die chemische Analyse wies nach, daß die Männchenexo‐Brevicomin, und Spuren vonendo‐Brevicomin abgeben, die Weibchen Frontalin. Daneben produzieren beide Geschlecht

AbstractAs to control of the population density of phytophagous insects by their food‐plant 4. The interaction between plant and insectFor the analysis of population dynamics insects and their host‐plants are considered as links in single and multiple systems which interact on a metabolic basis. With the example of selected data from literature the changes in density of phytophagous insects are investigated in Middle‐ and North‐European forests with different intensity of management. Long‐ and short‐time control by the tree are connected to the direction and speed of the changes in size of insect populations whereby the interaction is considered as a mass‐flux. On the basis of metabolic data gained under controlled conditions a simple model of the control process is proposed. The different requirements and aims of control in forests of different management are pointed out.ZusammenfassungFür die populationsdynamische Analyse werden Insekten und ihre Wirtspflanzen als Partner in ein‐ und mehrbindigen Systemen aufgefaßt, die auf stoffwechselphysiologischer Ebene miteinander in Verbindung treten. Am Beispiel von ausgewählten Literaturangaben werden die Dichteänderungen von Phyllophagen in unterschiedlich intensiv bewirtschafteten Wäldern Mittel‐ und Nordeuropas auf ihre gegenseitige Wechselwirkung untersucht. Lang‐ und Kurzzeitsteuerung durch den Baum werden in Beziehung zu Richtung und Geschwindigkeit der Populationsänderungen der Insekten gesetzt, wobei die gegenseitige Wechselwirkung als Massefluß behandelt wird. Auf der Basis von unter kontrollierten Bedingungen gewonnenen Stoffwechseldaten wird ein einfaches Modell der Steuerung vorgeschlagen. AbstractOverwintered larvae, and pupae of the codling moth were scraped from apple tree trunks in spring 1981–1984 and investigated for parasites and pathogenes. The total mortality ranged from 49.6 to 77.8%. Elodia morioFall. (Tachinidae) was the most common species among the parasites that emerged during the years (50.6 %). Possible reasons why a higher percentage ofE. moriowere found in this investigation as compared with other european countries are discussed.Pristomerus vulneratorPanz. (Ichneumonidae) andAscogaster quadridentatusWesm. (Braconidae) were the second most common (22.9 and 14.7 %, respectively). Of the cadavers collected in 1981–1982, the fungal pathogenesBeauveria bassiana(Bals.) Vuill. andPaecilomyces farinosus(Dicks, ex Fr.) Brown et Smith, accounted for an infection rate of 34.4 and 29.5 %, respectively. Totally 26.2 % of the experimentally exposed overwintering codling moth larvae were taken by birds. Although based on a small number of samples, birds showed a clear tendency to density‐dependent predation.ZusammenfassungDie natürlichen Feinde des Apfelwicklers (Laspeyresia pomonella L.) (Lep., Tortricidae) und ihr Einfluß auf überwinternde Populationen in SüdschwedenÜberwinterte Larven sowie Puppen des Apfelwicklers wurden 1981–1984 im Frühling von Apfelbaumstämmen geschabt und auf Parasiten und Pathogene untersucht. AbstractSome of the factors considering parasitoid efficiency were investigated. Attention was focused on the effect of host density on parasitism and the appearance of host selection in theEncarsia formosa‐Trialeurodes vaporariorumrelationship. Functional responses were determined by offeringE. formosadifferent densities of either first, second, third of fourth whitefly larval instars during a fixed time period. The relationship equated to a type II functional response. No correlation was found between the numbers of ovipositor punctures on the larvae and the numbers of parasitoid eggs, therefore, the numbers of parasitized whitefly larvae were recorded by dissection for parasitoid eggs.A statistical model was developed to analyse the results from experiments in which mixtures of different instars were offered toE. formosa. Because the parasitoid searches at random once landed on the leaf, host encounters are dependent on the numbers of hosts and their size. Host preference also plays an important role. A significant preference ofE. formosafor 2nd instar larvae to 1st, 3rd to 1st and 4th to 1st, and for 3rd + 4th to 2nd could be concluded from a statistical analysis of the data.ZusammenfassungFunktionelle Reaktion und Wirtsbevorzugung von Encarsia formosa Gahan (Hym., Aphelinidae), ein Parasit von Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) (Hom., Aleyrodidae) in GewächshäusernDie Arbeit behandelt einerseits den Einfluß der Wirtsdichte auf die Parasitierung durchE. formosaund andererseits die Wirtswahl in derE. formosa/T. vaporariorum‐Beziehung. Durch das Angebot unterschiedlich vieler Wirtslarven jeweils des 1., 2., 3. oder 4. Larvenstadiums wurden funktionelle Reaktionskurven bestimmt. Die Beziehung zwischen der Anzahl angebotener und davon parasitierter Larven entsprach einer funktionellen Reaktion des Typs II.Es bestand keine Korrelation zwischen der Zahl der Ovipositor‐Narben auf den Larven und der vonE. formosaabgelegten Eier. Es wurden daher die Larven seziert, um die Zahl der abgelegten Eier zu bestimmen.Die Ergebnisse der Wirtswahluntersuchungen wurden mit einem hierfür entwickelten statistischen Modell ausgewertet.E. formosawurden Mischungen der verschiedenen Larvenstadien der Weißen Fliege angeboten. Da der Parasit den Wirt rein zufällig sucht, wird die Begegnung mit dem Wirt durch Wirtsdichte und Wirtsgröße beeinflußt. Die statistische Analyse der Ergebnisse zeigt deutlich, daßE. formosadas 2. AbstractWhen isolated without possibilities to parasitize or feed from the host,Encarsia formosahas a longer life‐span and more oocytes per ovariole when honey is provided as food, than when no food is available. The life‐span with honey as diet is also longer than with several other diets (water, glucose, bean leaf, honeydew and/or first‐stage larvae ofTrialeurodes vaporariorum) but shorter than the life‐span of parasites that had parasitization and host‐feeding possibilities. Female parasites live longer than males. No relation was found between the size of the parasite and its lifespan. The host‐plant species on which the whitefly developed affects the life‐span ofE. formosa.The numbers of parasitizations and host feedings are not correlated throughout the life‐span ofE. formosa. E. formosais an autogenous insect. Life‐span is not negatively affected by a period without hosts immediately after hatching when honey is available; when no food is provided lifespan is reduced. The number of mature oocytes per ovariole at the start of an oviposition period and the number of eggs laid per day during the oviposition period are positively correlated (r = 0.97). In 3 tables the factors affecting oosorption, the influence of food and of size on life‐span, and the relationship between feeding behaviour and ovipositional behaviour of hymenopterous parasitic species are compared.ZusammenfassungZur Wirt‐Parasit‐Beziehung zwischen Encarsia formosa Gahan (Hymenoptera, Aphelinidae) und Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) (Homoptera, Aleyrodidae). Die Lebensdauer ist bei Fütterung mit Honig länger als bei jener mit Wasser, Glukose, Bohnenblättern, Honigtau und/ oderT. vaporariorumL1‐Larven, jedoch kürzer als bei Parasitierungs‐ und Ernährungsmöglichkeiten. Die weiblichen Tiere des Parasiten leben länger als die männlichen. Zwischen Größe und Lebensdauer des Parasiten konnte keine Korrelation festgestellt werden. Die Wirtspflanzenart, auf welcher sich die Weiße Fliege entwickelt, beeinflußt die Lebensdauer vonE. formosa. Die Anzahl parasitierter und gefressener Wirte korreliert nicht während der Lebensdauer vonE. formosa. E. formosaist ein autogenes Insekt. Wenn Honig als Futter zur Verfügung steht, wird die Lebensdauer nicht negativ durch eine unmittelbar auf das Schlüpfen folgende Periode ohne Wirtstiere beeinflußt; jedoch wird die Lebensdauer reduziert, wenn keine Nahrung angeboten wird. Zwischen der Zahl reifer Oocyten pro Ovariole zu Beginn der Eiablage‐Periode und der Zahl der abgelegten Eier pro Tag während dieser Periode besteht eine positive Korrelation (r = 0,97). AbstractThe distribution of outbreaks ofNeodiprion sertiferon Scots pine along a mountain slope was analysed. The degree of damage increased with altitude. In rearing experiments larvae grew best on trees with high nitrogen content and the nitrogen content of trees increased with increasing altitude. In principal component analysis the contrast of nitrogen and dry matter content of needles best explained the degree of damage. It was suggested that trees at upper slope are growing in stressful conditions which decrease their resistance against herbivores.ZusammenfassungTopographische Abgrenzung des Neodiprion‐sertifer‐Befalls (Hym., Diprionidae) an Kiefer in Beziehung zur NadelqualitätIn verschiedenen Höhenlagen eines Gebirges wurde die Verteilung desN.‐sertifer‐Befalls untersucht. Das Ausmaß des Schadens stieg mit der Höhe an. Bei Fütterungsversuchen entwickelten sich Larven auf Bäumen mit hohem Stickstoffgehalt am besten. Der Stickstoffgehalt der Nadeln stieg mit steigender Höhenlage des Wuchsgebiets. In einer Haupt‐Komponenten‐Analyse erklärte der Gegensatz von Stickstoffgehalt zu Trockensubstanz der Nadeln das Schadensausmaß am besten. AbstractResults are presented of laboratory, semi‐field and field tests to assess the side effects of pesticides on beneficial organisms obtained during the third testing programme of the Working Group “Pesticides and Beneficial Organisms” of the International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC), West Palaearctic Regional Section (WPRS). The programme included 22 pesticides, 19 beneficial organisms, and was carried out by 19 group members in 9 European countries. Beside the results of the third testing programme, data on the side effects of 62 pesticides tested in all three joint programmes carried out between 1977 and 1985 are summarized in 7 different croporientated tables. These tables include beneficial organisms that are relevant to, and pesticides that are used on (a) vegetable crops (especiallyBrassicaspp.), (b) glasshouse crops, (c) top fruit, (d) cereals, (e) root and forage crops (sugar‐beet, potato, rape, corn), (f) vine and (g) forestry.Among the 62 pesticides tested, the following 25 compounds were of limited persistence and/or were relatively less toxic to the natural enemies tested: Dipel (Bacillus thuringiensis), Torque (fenbutatin oxide, AAzomate (benzoximate), Dimilin (diflubenzuron), Tedion V 18 (tetradifon), Kelthane (dicofol), Spruzit‐Nova‐flüssig (pyrethrum + piperonylbutoxide), Pirimor‐Granulat (pirimicarb), Nimrod (bupirimate), Bayleton (triadimefon), Ronilan (vinclozolin), Orthocid 83 (captan), Cercobin‐M (thiophanat‐methyl), Ortho Difolatan (captafol), Derosal (carbendazim), Daconil 500 (chlorothalonil), Plondrel (ditalimfos), Pomarsol forte (thiram), Dithane Ultra (mancozeb), Illoxan (diclofop‐methyl), Semeron (desmetryn), Betanal (phenmedipham), Kerb 50 W (propyzamid), Cycocel Extra (chlormequat), Rhodofix (naphthyl acetic acid).ZusammenfassungErgebnisse des dritten gemeinsamen Prüfungsprogrammes für Pflanzenschutzmittel der IOBC/WRPS‐Arbeitsgruppe “Pflanzenschutzmittel und Nutzorganismen”Im Rahmen eines dritten gemeinsamen Prüfprogrammes der Arbeitsgruppe “Pflanzenschutzmittel und Nutzorganismen” der Internationalen Organisation für Biologische Schädlingsbekämpfung wurden Pflanzenschutzmittel in Labor‐, Halbfreiland‐ und Freilandprüfverfahren auf Nebenwirkungen gegenüber Nutzorganismen getestet.
