AbstractCigarettes in packets of 15 have now been available in Australia since 1985. A survey conducted among 14 and 15 year old adolescents in the Adelaide metropolitan area in May 1986, showed that 56.3 per cent of smokers in this age group had purchased packets of 15 in the month prior to the survey. This proportion compared with 8.8 per cent of adult smokers in a survey conducted two weeks earlier. These results suggest that marketing cigarettes in packets of 15 is targeted specifically at the adolescent market. Some methods for dealing with this method of marketing are identified.

AbstractTobacco smoking habits in adults in Busselton, Western Australia, including age at beginning smoking, are described from the triennial surveys conducted between 1966 and 1981. That the proportion of ex‐smokers apparently rose faster in Busselton than it did in the whole of Australia may have been due, in part, to the reporting of smoking habits to family doctors which occurred after each Busselton survey. Different patterns of smoking experience were observed in men (a rise in the proportion of never smokers) and women (a decline in the proportion of never smokers, and a fall in the average age at beginning smoking). Thus in those born most recently and represented in the surveys, the proportion of never smokers was a bout the same in women as in men. AbstractData from a 1983 survey of 4265 school students are presented. Girls smoked more than boys in all but one age group; 45 per cent of current smokers stated they did not intend stopping; 12 per cent of non‐smokers believed that they would take it up; 67.5 per cent of students overestimated the number of people who smoke; and only 7.8 per cent of students correctly rated tobacco as the drug that causes the greatest number of deaths from a list of different recreational drugs. A case is argued for health education efforts which place greater emphasis on the health consequences of smoking than is currently fashionable in many health education effort

AbstractThe prevalence of smoking among nurses is sometimes attributed to specific stressful conditions of work in the traditional hospital training program. Such conditions do not apply in recently introduced tertiary nurse training programs. In this study 204 final year student nurses from hospital‐based training programs and from a College of Advanced Education were questioned about their smoking behaviour. Thirty six per cent of the total sample were current smokers, 33 per cent had quit the habit and 32 per cent had never smoked. Over 75 per cent of current smokers began smoking before they started nurse training. No statistically significant differences in smoking behaviour were observed between the tertiary and hospital trained groups. This result should be interpreted with caution, because of the small number of nurses studied, and the limited number of institutions which were sampled. However, it is consistent with evidence from other sources, that the factors which lead most nurses to smoke lie in theirexperiences prior to nursing, and not in the nature or location of their training program.
