AbstractThe kinetics of oxygen transfer between gases and liquid silver were studied at oxygen partial pressure of 0.0–1.0 atm. Three experimental systems were used. The first involved the impingement of a gas jet at the free surface of a 17 kg molten silver bath, using pure oxygen and oxygen-diluent gas mixtures at 1 atm. total pressure. The jet momentum was varied in the range 0.0-0.25 N and the lance height was 0.1 m.The second involved an unstirred 0.019 kg melt in oxygen-diluent gas mixtures at 1 atm, total pressure. The kinetics of oxygen transfer were measured by gravimetry. The third system also used gravimetry but was operated at reduced total pressure. This permitted critical experiments to elucidate the role of surface tension driven flow in absorption and desorption.For the conditions studied the kinetics were controlled by mass transfer in the liquid and/or gas phases. During desorption with oxygen-diluent gas mixtures, surface tension driven convection developed spontaneously, whereas during absorption the interface was positively stabilised. The observations were consistent with theoretical predictions which are supported by a body of experimental evidence from low temperature systems.RésuméLes cinétiques du transfert d'oxygène entre phases gazeuses et argent liquide ontétéétudiées pour des pressions partielle.s d'oxygène comprises entre 0.0 et 1.0 atm. Trois types d'expériences ontétéréalisées:La première consiste en un souffiage d'oxygène pure ou diluée,àpression atmosphérique, sur la surface libre d'un bain contenant 17 kg d'argent liquide. La lance est fixéeà0.1 m de la surface du bain alors que la poussée du gaz est ajustée entre 0.0 et 0.25 N. La seconde s'eifectueàl'aide d'un bain de 0.019 kg d'argent liquide et de mélanges gazeux dilués en oxygèneàpression totale de 1.0 atm. Les cinétiques de transfert d'oxygène furent mesurées par gravimétrie. Le troisieme système aussi fait appelàla gravimétrie, mais les expériences furent dans ce cas conduites a pression réduite. Ces expériences ont permis d'elucider le rôle de l'ecoulement engendrépar la tension superficielle lors de l'absorption et de la désorption.Pour les conditions etudiées les cinétiquesétaient controlées par le transfert de masse dans le liquide et/ou les phases gazeuses. Lors de la désorption avec des mélanges gazeux dilués en oxygène, la convection engendrée par la tension de surface se développe spontanément, alors que pour l'absorption l'interface se stabilise. Ces observations sont en accord avec les prédictions théoriques, déja confirmées par bon nombres d'expériences menées sur des systèmesàbasse température.

AbstractThis paper describes the results of surface tension measurements of liquid iron. and iron-oxygen alloys by the oscillating droplet method using the levitation technique.The data are compared to those obtained by the sessile drop method, the technique most frequently employed for surface tension measurements of liquid metals. It has. become apparent that the values generated by the sessile drop method are lower than those of the oscillating droplet technique. The discrepancy is attributable to sample contamination from the reduction of silica present in sessile drop reaction tubes.From the surface tension data, details of the oxygen adsorption layer are developed. It has been concluded that the adsorbed layer at saturation is composed of a simple two-dimensional FeO compound which has a NaCl-type structure.RésuméDes résultats concernant les valeurs de la tension superficielle du fer liquide et des alliages feroxygène ontétéobtenus par la méthode de la gouttelette oscillante réaliséeàl'aide de la technique de la lévitation.Ces valeurs sont comparéesàcelles obtenues par la méthode de la goutte tombante (sessile drop method) qui est la technique la plus couramment utilisée pour mesurer la tension superficielle des métaux liquides. On note que dans ce cas les valeurs sont inférieuresàcelles mesuréesàl'aide de la méthode de la gouttelette oscillante. Lesécarts sont attribuablesàla contamination deséchantillons par la réduction de la silice présente dans les tubes utilisés dans la méthode usuelle.A partir de ces mesures de la tension superficielle on a caractériséla couche d'adsorption de l'oxygène. On peut en déduire que cette couche est constituée,àla saturation, d'un composébi-dimensionnel simple de FeO dotéd'une structure semblableàcelle du NaCl.

AbstractThe effects of the elements of the b'column of the 6th group of the Periodic Table (O, S, Se and Te) on the surface tension of molten iron and the contact angle between molten iron and solid oxides have been measured with the sessile drop method.The effect of tellurium on the elimination of oxide inclusions (alumina, mullite and zirconia) from molten iron has been investigated. It was found that all of these elements acted as surface-active agents and in molten iron the surface activity increased in the order oxygen, sulphur, selenium, and tellurium. The contact angle between molten iron and alumina decreased with the addition of oxygen and increased with that of selenium and tellurium while sulphur scarcely had any effect. Moreover the contact angles on other oxides such as magnesia, mullite, and zirconia also increased with increasing tellurium content in the molten iron.The amount of inclusions in the molten iron decreased considerably with the addition of tellurium during the deoxidation with aluminum, aluminum and silicon, and zirconium. These phenomena can be explained satisfactorily with the decreasing of the surface tension of molten iron, the work of adhesion, and the interfacial energy between molten iron and solid oxides, and with the increasing of the contact angle between molten iron and solid oxides.RésuméOn a mesurél'aide de la methode de la goutte tombante (sessile drop method) les effets des elements O, S, Se et Te sur la valeur de la tension de surface du fer liquide et aussi sur la grandeur de l'angle de contact entre le fer Iiquide et les oxydes solides.On aégalementétudiél'éffet du Te sur l'élimination des inclusions des oxydes (alumine, mullite, zircone) contenues dans le fer liquide. Tous leséléments cités plus haut sont des agents tensio-actifs et l'effet augmente selon l'ordre O, S, Se et Te. L'angle de contact entre le fer liquide et l'alumine décroit en présence d'oxygène mais croit en présence de Se et Te, le soufre ayant très peu d'effet. Le Te augmenteégalement l'angle de contact entre le fer liquide et la magnésie, la mullite et la zircone.Le Te permet de diminuer considérablement la quantite d'inclusions contenues dans le fer liquide lorsque celui-ci aétédeoxyde en présence d'aluminium, d'aluminium et de silicium ou de zirconium. On attribue ce phénomène au décroissement de la tension superficielle du fer liquide, ainsi que du travail d'adhésion et de l'énergie interfaciale entre le fer liquide et les oxydes solides, etégalementàl'accroissement de l'angle de contact entre le fer liquide et les différents oxydes.

AbstractThe permeabilities of oxygen through molten CaO-SiO2-Al2O3system containing or not containing iron oxide and CaO-SiO2-iron oxide system were measured by means of an experimental procedure which was developed by the authors. An oxygen concentration cell method was used in the experiment.The permeability of oxygen through a molten slag increases by a factor of the 10th power of 10 when only 0.2% iron oxide is added to CaO-SiO2-Al2O3as master slag. It then increases in direct proportion to a concentration of the iron oxide until 10wt %. The permeability of oxygen through the molten CaO-SiO2-iron oxide system increases in direct proportion to a concentration of the iron oxide until it reaches about 20 mol % iron oxide. And then it decreases with an increase of the concentration of the iron oxide.It is estimated that oxygen as O2dissolves physically in the slag and permeates through the slag when the slag contains no iron oxide. On the other hand it is estimated that oxygen as O2−dissolves chemically in the slags and permeates through the slags when the slags contain iron oxide.RésuméLa perméabilitéde l'oxygèneàtravers les systémes fondus CaO-SiO2-Al2O3contenant ou ne contenant pas d'oxyde de fer et CaO-SiO2-FeO aétémesurée au moyen d'une procédure expérimentale développée par les auteurs. Une sondeàconcentration d'oxygène aétéutilisée dans cette expérimentation.La perméabilitéde l'oxygène dans une scorie augmente d'un facteur 10 exposant 10 quand seulement 0.2% de FeO est ajoutéa CaO-SiO2-Al2O3. Elle augmente en proportion directe de la concentration en oxyde de ferjusqu'à10%. La perméabilitéde l'oxygène dans le systeme CaO-SiO2-oxyde de fer liquide, augmente en proportion de la concentration de l'oxyde de fer jusqu'àce qu'on atteigne environ 20% d'oxyde de fer. Ensuite elle décroit avec l'augmentation de la concentration de l'oxyde de fer.On estime que l'oxygene sous forme O2, se dissout physiquement dans la scorie et diffuseàtravers la scorie quand la scorie ne contient pas d'oxyde de fer. D'autre part, on estime que O2−se dissout chimiquement dans la scorie et diffuseàtravers les scories contenant de l'oxyde de fer.

AbstractSelf-diffusion coefficient of oxygen has been measured by the capillary reservoir method in 56 mol % CaO–44 mol % SiO2melt and the temperature range between 1550and 1650°C under the atmosphere of high purity argon with 3% H2or of vacuum. As the tracer, stable isotope18O was used in the form of SiO2*prepared from18O enriched water and SiCl4. The diffusion coefficient was derived from the concentration-penetration curve which was determined by the mass analysis of CO2*combined with the carbon arc reduction of the capillary sample sectioned after diffusion run.The results obtained showed the end effect of the capillary which means that the effective length postulated by the theoretical concentration profile differs from the real length of the capillary. With the consideration of this effect, the following expression was obtained by the least squares regression on the theoretical solution of the Fick's second law:D= 1.5×107exp[(−408±36)/RT], in cm2S−1&kJmol−1, (1550–1650°C).Comparison with previous data and discussion were made about the composition dependency of the self-diffusivity of oxygen.

AbstractThe viscosities of the melts PbO-MO-SiO2(whereM= Mg, Ca, Ba, Ni and Co) containing 45, 50 and 55 mol % SiO2and the activities of PbO in the metasilicate melts have been measured by the counterbalanced sphere method and the Knudsen cell-mass spectrometer combination, respectively. From the experimental results, the behaviors of the two basic oxides in the melts have been estimated on the basis of the random network model. It may be concluded that the partial replacement of PbO-SiO2melts by NiO or CoO causes an increase in basicities of NiO and CoO, and. that the replacement of PbO in the PbO-SiO2melts to the same extent by CaO, BaO or MgO yields an apparent decrease in basicities of these oxides, and that such changes in the basicity depend on the concentration of SiO2in the melts.RésuméLes viscosites des melanges PbO-MO-SiO2(oùM= Mg, Ca, Ba, Ni et Co) contenant 45,50 et 55%mol. SiO2ainsi que les activités de PbO dans ceux-ci ontétémesurées respectivement par la méthode de la sphère contre-balancée et la combinaison cellule de Knudsen-spectromètre de masse. A partir des résultats expérimentaux, les comportements des deux oxydes basiques dans les mélanges ontétéestimésàpartir du modèle de réseau aléatoire. Nous pouvons conclure que Ie remplacement partiel des mélanges PbO-SiO2par NiO ou CoO provoque une augmentation des basicités de NiO et CoO, et que le remplacementéquivalent de PbO dans les melanges PbO-SiO2par CaO, BaO ou MgO conduitàune décroissance apparente des basicités de ces oxydes, et que de tels changements dans la basicitédépendent de la concentration de SiO2dans les mélanges.

AbstractThe dissolution and evolution measurements of SiF4(g) with CaF2+ CaO + SiO2melts‘have been carried out by Sieverts’method at 1450°C.The equilibriumPSiF4above the melts increases exponentially with decrease of basicity in calcium silicate constituting the melts, while it is less than the vapour pressure of CaF2above the melts whenNCaO/NSiO2≥1.5. The effects of CaF2concentration onPSiF4are practically constant in the CaF2-rich region. These results were analysed by applying a random model among Oo, O−, O2−, Foand F−. The results suggested that the behaviour of CaF2added into silicate melts can be interpreted as a competitive reaction between F−and O2−on the silicate network and that the ability of F−to disrupt the silicate network is far less than that of O2−.A calcium fluorosilicate which is considered to have Si-F bonds in addition to Ca- F bonds was detected in the solid samples made by rapid cooling of the melts equilibrated with SiF4gas at more than 104Pa.

AbstractOxygen concentration cells employing zirconia-calcia solid electrolytes were used to measure the thermodynamic properties of SnO in SnO-TiO2melts and to redetermine the properties of pure-SnO and SnO2. AbstractDisposal deep within hard rock formations of the Canadian Shield is the subject of intensive research as a potential solution to the problem of nuclear fuel waste management. The various elements of the disposal concept are described, with emphasis on the man-made components of the disposal system, namely, the waste forms and durable containers, and on the use of clay-type materials around the waste package as a barrier to diffusional transport of radioactive material.The methodology of the safety analysis that will be employed to predict the performance of the overall disposal system is introduced, and used to illustrate the demands that are placed on the research programs to provide sub-models and data for the safety assessment.

AbstractThe Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program is developing safe disposal methods for both irradiated nuclear fuel and fuel reprocessing wastes. Several different products are being developed for the fixation of high-level reprocessing waste. These include glass, glass-ceramic and crystalline matrices. Since penetration of groundwater into waste containers after disposal is the only likely scenario that could lead to radionuclide relase to the biosphere, research and development programs are placing considerable emphasis on the leaching and dissolution properties of waste forms under expected vault conditions. Both thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the dissolution of all waste forms, including irradiated fuel, are being considered in an attempt to predict waste behaviour long after disposal.Some aspects of the aqueous corrosion behaviour of irradiated fuel and glass and crystalline waste forms are reviewed briefly in this paper. The various factors that affect their dissolution behaviour are discussed, and examples of the effects of some of these factors on dissolution kinetics are demonstrated. Finally, some of the major uncertainties in the prediction of waste-form behaviour long after disposal are discussed.RésuméLe“Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program”chercheàdévelopper des méthodes sécuritaires pour l'entreposage et le recyclage des combustibles et des déchets nucleaires. La fixation de produits de recyclage fortement radioactifs sur differents matériaux dont des matrices cristallines, de verre ou de verre-céramique estétudiée. Puisque l'infiltration des eaux souterraines dans les réservoirs est un des processus pouvant entrainer des pertes d'éléments radioactifs dans la biosphère, les programmes de recherche et de développement sont orientés vers les propriétés de filtration et de dissolution des déchets dans les conditions d'entreposage déterminées. Dans le but de prévoir le comportementàlong terme des combustibles et déchets nucléaires, la thermodynamique et la cinétique de la dissolution de toute forme de rebuts sont considérées.Quelques aspects de la corrosion en milieu aqueux des déchets irradies, sous forme cristalline, de combustible ou de verre, sont revisés. Les différents paramètres caractérisant leur propriétés de dissolution sont discutés et l'influence de certains de ces facteurs sur la cinetique de dissolution est décrite. Finalement, les principales incertitudes sur la prévision du comportementàlong terme des différentes formes de déchets nucléaires sont discutées.
