ABSTRACTBreed, sex and age distribution were studied in dogs with histopathologically diagnosed chronic (active or progressive) hepatitis and liver cirrhosis in Sweden. The study was based on clinical and histopathological records obtained during three years from a histopathological laboratory and during six years from an animal hospital. Some breeds were significantly (P<0–001) over‐represented: American and English cocker spaniels, labrador retrievers and West Highland white terriers. In both spaniel breeds the males were most frequent whereas in the labrador retriever, the females were over represented. In the West Highland white terrier there was no sex difference. The average age at presentation was approximately five years in spaniels and West Highland white terriers and seven years in labrador retrievers. The high incidence of chronic liver disease and liver cirrhosis in certain breeds indicate that hereditary factors may be of importance in the development of chronic hepatitis and liver cirrho

ABSTRACTSterility is relatively rare in exhibition budgerigars, but it does occur. In this study infertility in males resulted from abnormal or absent sperm production and abnormal sexual behaviour. The latter was also found in infertile hens, together with hernias altering the cloacal anatomy, infections and cysts of the oviduct and deformed ovarian follicles. Infertility was also commonly associated with the presence of disease outside the reproductive system in both sexes.

ABSTRACTA condition involving ocular pigment deposition was diagnosed in six cairn terriers. In each, there was pigment deposition in a number of ocular sites, including the episclera, and ventral anterior chamber and drainage angle. Four of the dogs (aged 10 years or older) had developed a chronic glaucoma, which was presumed to be secondary to pigment deposition in the drainage angle. ABSTRACTA five‐year‐old German shepherd dog was presented with a severe scrotal dermatitis of four weeks duration which had failed to respond to antibiotic and corticosteroid therapy. Dermato‐histopathology indicated that the lesion was a necrolytic process suggestive of the hepatocuta‐neous syndrome. Clinical biochemistry investigations indicated the presence of acute hepatocellular damage and cholestasis. The animal was fed a biscuit meal which was damp and mouldy.Penicillium vindicationwas grown from this feedstuff and three mycotoxins, citrinin, ochratoxin A and sterigmatocystin, were found; substances which have been associated with renal and hepatic lesions in dogs and laboratory animals. Symptomatic therapy and nutritional management, led to rapid clinical improvement. Subsequent plasma biochemistry confirmed that hepatic enzyme activities were returning to normal
