ABSTRACTChronic enteropathies are a common and diverse group of diseases in the dog, but diagnosis can be difficult and morphological criteria are an inadequate means of classification. The introduction of new screening procedures together with a biochemical approach to the analysis of tissue damage has assisted the characterisation of previously unrecognised conditions and provided insight into the causes of chronic intestinal disease in this species. These advances are reviewed and current knowledge of other important canine enteropathies characterised by predominantly morphological criteria is summarised.

ABSTRACTNormal values for motor conduction in the tibial, ulnar and fibular nerves of dogs have been determined using a new method for recording and analysing evoked motor potentials. The use of an alligator clip as a roving surface electrode for recording, and a personal computer to analyse the evoked potentials has facilitated faster and more reproducible motor conduction studies. Compound muscle action potential (CMAP) and motor nerve conduction velocity data are in good agreement with previous studies. Normal values for CMAP area, residual latency and proximal to distal ratios for CMAP area and amplitude are presented for the first time.

ABSTRACTThe responses of certain muscles to stimulation at different frequencies has been studied in normal dogs. Repetitive stimulation at 10 and 20 Hz resulted in a smooth, progressive decremental response when the compound muscle action potential (CMAP) was recorded from the plantar, and to a lesser extent the palmar, interosseous muscles. In contrast, there was a slight incremental response when the CMAP was recorded from the cranial tibial muscle. Studies using a competitive neuromuscular blocking agent have suggested that the plantar interosseous muscles have a greater proportion of low efficacy synapses in comparison with the other muscles studied. The cranial tibial muscle may therefore be more suitable for assessing neuromuscular transmission than the distal limb muscles.

ABSTRACTAn abnormality of the hair shaft of the whiskers and guard hairs of Abyssinian cats, consisting of an onion‐shaped swelling, usually situated at the tip of the hair but occasionally at other sites along the hair shaft, is reported. Where the abnormality occurs in the guard hairs it imparts a rough, brittle and lustreless appearance to the coat. ABSTRACTExocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) was diagnosed in two German shepherd dogs and treatment given for three months and two years.
