Two patients with pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) in childhood were observed. The affection was characterised by an acute onset and relatively short evolution. It was not noted that the disease was familiar. A focal infection of the tonsils which existed prior to the skin lesions in both cases was considered as a provocative factor. PRP of an acute onset in childhood could not be considered as special entity, but as a clinical variety of PRP and is characterised by satisfactory prognosis. Two patients with dermatitis traumatica due to repeated biting were studied. Biopsies from the grossly thickened traumatized areas were compared with adjacent normal skin. The altered epidermis was 5–8 times thicker than normal and the corium was more than twice as thick as normal. Blood vessels and nerves appeared to be increased in number and larger in diameter in the traumatized areas. Hair follicles in the traumatized area were enlarged and contained coarse terminal hairs in contrast to lanugo hairs in the normal skin. A relative absence of inflammation in the traumatized skin contrasted with the inflammatory changes seen in lichen simplex chronicus and prurigo nodularis. The follicular-keratogenic properties of several fatty acids were investigated by application in the external ear canal of the rabbit. Laurinic acid and oleic acid induced marked, and caprinic acid moderate inflammation and follicular keratosis. Myristinic, palmitinic and stearinic acid induced no distinct alterations. The histologic picture of the induced alterations is described. Statistical analysis of the values, obtained by quantification of histologic changes (table I) showed significant differences between the individual treatment groups.

A survey is given of a number of investigations concerning the question of identity or non-identity of housedust and D.pteronyssinus mite allergen. Skin tests show a correlation of the reactions to these allergens in about 90% of patients. Inhalation provocation tests with these allergens, however, fail to show such a high degree of correlation. Skin tests with the culture medium of the mites were compared to those with the mite culture. In this latter series of experiments clearly positive reactions were to be found also to the culture medium, provided the latter had been tested in a higher concentration. This finding cannot be explained by the content of human dandruff in the culture medium, but might be ascribed to an internal reaction taking place in the culture medium, with or without the presence of mites.

In 3 patients with clinically not very characteristic small skin tumours on the face the histological examination showed in all cases an intra-epidermal epithelial proliferation, characterised among other things by variable papillomatosis, and a more or less distinct relation to the hair follicles. In the first 2 patients the histological picture corresponded to that of inverted follicular keratosis [Helwig, 1955] and a ‘porome folliculaire’ [Duperrat and Mascaro, 1963] respectively. The microscopic changes observed in the 3rd patient conformed to those of tricholemmoma described in 1962 by Headington and French. In 1 of the patients besides a ‘porome folliculaire’ a very characteristic inverted follicular keratosis (IFK) was found. From serial sections histological similarities between lhese 2 epidermal tumours were also brought to light. The same was the case with tricho-temmona and ‘porome folliculaire’. The authors present a case of multiple sebaceous tumours and kerato acanthomata of the skin in a man who in a period of 21 years was also treated twice for a carcinoma of the colon and once for a carcinoma of the stomach. In the literature only two comparable cases have been found. It is suggested that these three cases represent examples of a rare syndrome.

A case of inoculation leprosy resulting after 7 years of tatooing in a female aged 25 years is described. This conforms to high resistant tuberculoid leprosy and illustrates an inoculation by lepra bacilli as an alternative route for the transmission of leprosy.

The functional state of the thyroid gland was in 47 patients with Alopecia areata (AA) determined (20 males, 27 females). In all cases the scintigraphy of the thyroid gland and T2 was performed. 46 patients were euthyroid, one female hypothyroid. In further clinically investigated 56 patients with A. A. (24 males, 32 females) the authors did not found any case of struma, or symptoms of hypo- and hyperthyroidism. The opinion of the authors is, that it is very doubtful if a causal relationsship between A. a. and diseases of the thyroid gland exists.
