The zone of human skin between the epidermis and dermis is called the dermal-epidermal junction (DEJ). The importance of the DEJ is outlined and three new areas of research involving the DEJ are reviewed: the intracellular pool of bullous pemphigoid antigen, the interactions between fibronectin and keratinocytes and the epidermolysis bullosa acquisita antigen.

A tunable pulsed dye laser emitting at 577 nm and 360 μs pulse width was used to treat benign cutaneous vascular ectasias other than port wine stain in 77 patients. Except for leg telangiectasias (34 patients), the overall response was excellent. Forty-two of forty-five patients with hemangiomas, spider nevi, angioma serpiginosum, venous lakes or facial telangiectasias showed excellent results after 1–4 consecutive treatments. Scarring was observed in none of the patients. These results confirm previous data on the use of the tunable dye laser in the treatment of port wine stain, and suggest that 577 nm wavelength and 360 μs pulse width allow the selective photothermolysis of vascular cutaneous ectasias with better clinical results than previously repor

The applicability of liposomal hydrocortisone (HC) as a selective drug delivery system for cutaneous administration of glucocorticoids has been studied. With the liposomal form, a considerably better concentration-time profile was obtained in the individual layers of human skin than with the corresponding HC ointment. The pronounced carrier ability of liposomes for HC holds promise for an increase in its therapeutic efficacy, thus reducing unwanted side effects of the topical glucocorticoid therapy.

This study describes a case of secondary syphilis with a papular eruption and penile ulceration. A chest roentgenogram showed a solitary lesion in the left middle lung field. Histological examination revealed epithelioid cell granuloma in both the penile ulcer and the lung lesion. After antisyphilitic treatment, the lung lesion shrunk remarkably and at the same time the skin eruption and the systemic symptoms also improved.

Nonspecific gyrate erythemas (NGE) are commonly associated with hypersensitivity reactions to exogenous or endogenous antigens. A case of NGE with clinical resemblance to tinea corporis in a patient with a dental radicular cyst is reported. Cutaneous lesions disappeared after surgical excision of the dental cyst. The clinical and pathological details are described and the relationship between radicular cyst and cutaneous lesions discussed. Earlier reports are reviewed and the possibility of a focal origin is emphasized.

Mycosis fungoides (MF) is, on extremely rare occasions, associated with vesiculobullous eruptions. This report describes clinical, histological and immunohistochemical findings of a case of MF with vesiculobullous lesions. A patient with infiltration of the skin resulting in eyelid swelling and facial nodules was recognized as a case of sea-blue histiocyte syndrome with cutaneous involvement. Typical sea-blue histiocytes were found in the skin and confirmation was provided by electron microscopy. Hepatosplenomegaly, lung infiltrates and bone marrow involvement were the other symptoms. The relationship between sea-blue histiocyte syndrome and adult Niemann-Pick disease is also discussed.

A 5-year-old girl had a caudal appendage and her left buttock was larger than the right buttock. X-ray examination revealed spina bifida and bony defect of sacrum; computed tomography demonstrated the extension of the tumor from subcutaneous tissue to the spinal canal. Histologically, the pseudotail contained lobulated fatty tissue which was consistent with lipoma. It emphasizes the fact that even lesions that are not situated in the median line should be carefully explored before excision.
