Thirty-four married couples with clinically unexplained infertility and normal spermiograms in all male partners were investigated for sperm antibodies by means of the sperm agglutination, sperm immobilization and sperm immunofluorescence test. In 50% of the couples, sperm antibodies were found in at least one of the partners and with at least one of the tests, e.g. ten times in the female partner alone, six times in the male partner alone, and once in both partners. The correspondance of the three tests was astonishingly low; it is assumed, therefore, that they indicate different types of antibodies. On the basis of the present investigations it is not possible to assess which type of antibody is responsible for the infertility of the female or male partner respectively. This seems only possible when the decrease of certain antibody types can be determined after a period of no antigen contact (avoidance of sperm contact) and when conception has taken place. The significance of autoanti bodies against sperm in clinically healthy men with normal spermiograms remains open.

This paper reviews the percutaneous penetration of corticosteroids in vivo in man utilizing urinary excretion of 14C-hydrocortisone as the experimental method. In general corticosteroids are only minimally absorbed from most areas of glabrous skin. A three-factor factorial experiment was performed to assess the efficiency of lipid extraction from the back of human volunteers. Chloroform-methanol (2:1 v/v) proved substantially superior to acetone or diethyl ether. The latter two solvents were also significantly more efficient than n-hexane. The implication of the findings is discussed with regard to the isolation and characterization of fungistatic and bacteriostatic agents on the surface of the skin.

Various methods for measuring percutaneous absorption are discussed with particular reference to glucocorticosteroids. Increasing concentrations of steroids in a given formulation will yield a decreasing percent of amount penetrating and a corresponding proportionate decrease in biologic activity. The formulation can shift the relationships of concentration to penetration and to biologic activity. The use of bioassay methods to detect penetration of antibiotics has been applied to find an active topical antibiotic for treatment of acne vulgaris.

We have observed great alterations of the arrector pili muscle in a case of dermatomyositis. These alterations were as follows: diminution and then loss of the staining properties of the smooth muscle fibres, perinuclear vacuolization, great heterogeneity in the degeneration of fibres, elective involvement of the cyto-fibrillary system with integrity of the other constituents of the arrector muscle and the surrounding dermis. This smooth myositis is nonspecific and similar to the one observed in other internal diseases (scleroderma, chronic alcoholism).
