A comparative examination of the hair of the members of a family with monilethrix was carried out. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in the examination. It could be shown that the hair of persons with monilethrix showed a clear irregularity in its surface structure. A corresponding pattern was found in the clinically healthy sister and the likewise healthy father. The surface of the mother’s hair showed a normal condition. The Capillary characteristics of the nail fold area were examined and compared by capillary microscopy in 31 patients with psoriasis (PS) and 34 patients with psoriatic arthritis (PA). 70 healthy persons served as controls. Significantly shorter mean capillary loop lengths and characteristic morphological capillary changes were found both in patients with PS and in patients with PA as compared to the controls. The number of hemorrhages and sluggishness of blood flow was more pronounced in both groups of patients as compared to the control group, but only significantly so in patients with PA. The only significant difference between the PS and the PA groups was a higher subpapillary plexus visibility (SPV) index in the latter. It is concluded that most of the capillary changes demonstrable in patients with PA are clinical manifestations of PS. The difference in the SPV index, however, warrants a follow-up study to elucidate whether patients with PS and a high SPV index are likely to develop arthritis.

A localized form of ‘Pagetoid reticulosis’ (Woringer-Kolopp’s disease) is described morphologically. It can be shown that ultrastructurally the ‘Pagetoid cells’ are heterogenic and that different cell types can be distinguished: there are lymphoid cells, which often look like Lutzner cells, and nonlymphoid cells which can be characterized as indeterminate cells or Langerhans’ cells. Often a close topographical relation between lymphoid and nonlymphoid cells can be demonstrated. This finding is suggestive for a functional interaction between the lymphoid cells, which are most probably T cells, and indeterminate cells and Langerhans’ cells, which are known to be important for the thymus-dependent immune reaction. The presence of the nonlymphoid cell population in the epidermis in Woringer-Kolopp’s disease seems to build up the specific microenvironment for lymphoi

A case of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin associated with disturbance of the IgA system is described. Immunological observations revealed a marked low level of serum IgA and disturbance of the secretory IgA synthesis in the rectal mucosa. After the surgical removal of the skin tumor, the serum level of IgA was increased to half the normal-range level. The relationship of the disturbance of the IgA system to the occurrence of squamous cell carcinoma is discussed.

An additional case of verruciform xanthoma in the oral cavity is presented. The clinical and light microscopic findings in this case are similar to those previously described. In addition, the clinical features of 47 cases that could be found in the literature are summarized and discussed.

In 2 patients with anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, we were able to show that the hypoplastic eccrine glandular elements may give rise to normal eccrine glands both anatomically and functionally, after repeated local application of acetylcholine. The perspectives of our findings for the therapeutic management of the anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia are discussed and special attention is paid to the genetic background of the defect as well as the possible mode of action of acetylcholine.
