TheArchives of Dermatologyis pleased to welcome in this issue two new members to its Editorial Board—Clarence S. Livingood and Walter C. Lobitz, Jr. Both of them are well known and highly respected by their colleagues, not solely for their significant scientific contributions to dermatology, but also for their friendly and engaging personalities and their unstinted efforts in behalf of dermatology. Each is a distinguished investigator, clinician, teacher, and administrator of experience.Dr. Livingood is Chairman of the Department of Dermatology of the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Formerly, he served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Dermatology at both Jefferson Medical College and the University of Texas School of Medicine. As Consultant to the Secretary of War, he served as Associate Editor of the Dermatology Section of the "History of World War II." At present he is a member of the Residency Review Committee, and ju

The allergic reaction in industry of most interest to the dermatologist is allergic contact dermatitis, which accounts for 20% or less of all occupationally incurred contact dermatitis. Other forms of industrial allergy are uncommon to rare, but the dermatologist may also see some cases of bronchial asthma and urticaria caused by certain agents in the occupational environment. This review of allergens in industry is designed to furnish broader knowledge of the multiple potentialities of some allergens and to emphasize the need to consider a more complete toxicologic picture of an industrial exposure.The list of asthma-producing substances cited in Table 1 has been arbitrarily limited to exposures which can produce both allergic bronchial asthma and allergic contact dermatitis. The classic examples are ragweed hay fever-asthma and ragweed dermatitis. The problem of photosensitivity produced by drugs has attracted great interest and has been the subject of many investigations since Tappeiner and Raab in 1900 first described the photodynamic reaction which occurs when paramecia in an acridine solution are exposed to light.1The most significant advance in our understanding of drug photosensitivity since that time was brought about by the classical studies of Stephan Epstein concerning sulfanilamide photosensitivity in man in 1939.2Epstein demonstrated 2 distinctly different mechanisms capable of producing photosensitivity to drugs. The first was a phototoxic reaction which occurred in all persons receiving adequate exposures to ultraviolet light following intracutaneous injection of sulfanilamide. The second mechanism was observed only in a very small number of those similarly exposed. It had the features of an allergic response and therefore was labeled a photoallergic reaction. W. Burckhardt, also working with sulfanilamide in man, confirmed Epstein's work shortly

The University of Chicago has honored me greatly by inviting me to present a guest lecture. First of all, I wish to express my profound gratitude for this distinction. I am also aware that the acceptance of this invitation imposes an obligation; I must abandon the framework of a narrow specialty because an address to colleagues of the various faculties demands that one emphasize the relationship of one's own specialty to other fields of science and scholarship. It is for this reason that I have chosen as the subject of my lecture the relationship of dermatology to the arts and the sciences.The inclusion of the methods of the arts and the sciences will doubtlessly offer new possibilities for the understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of many diseases, which have, until now, not been sufficiently explored. I would like to demonstrate this by the example of my own specialty,

This paper deals with the relationships between benign hyperglobulinemic purpura, the sicca syndrome of Gougerot and Sjögren, and Mikulicz's disease. Patients demonstrating these relationships will be described, and a hitherto unreported association of hyperglobulinemic purpura and epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica proposed. No complete review of the literature on these subjects will be attempted since recent excellent reviews are readily available.1,2Briefly, benign hyperglobulinemic purpura of Waldenström has been reported in about 30 patients. Purpura appears on the lower legs, usually after prolonged standing or exercise, although one patient had areas of extensive cutaneous hemorrhage involving the trunk and upper extremities as well as the legs.3A crucial feature is the presence of an unexplained dysproteinemia. The serum proteins are elevated, sometimes markedly, the elevation being confined to the globulin fractions, especially theγ-globulins. There has been little advance in our knowledge of mechanism of light sensitivity since 1900, when Raab published the results of his experiments concerning the effects of acridine hydrochloride on paramecia. Briefly, he found that an acridine solution of 1:20,000 would kill paramecia exposed to direct sunlight in 6 minutes, and that in diffused light it took 60 minutes to kill the paramecia, while in the dark it had no lethal action whatsoever.Since Raab's publication there have been several reviews of the subject, the most recent being those of Matthews (1937) and Clare (1952). Although the pathological changes of photosensitization have been described in great detail by Hausmann (1911) and again by Levy (1926), the mechanism by which these changes are brought about has remained obscure. Hausmann thought capillary thrombi accounted for the necrotizing lesions, while Levy ascribed them to circulatory stasis.The object of his paper is to

In the past, the various forms of pemphigus have been grouped together primarily on the basis of similarities in clinical findings. These clinical distinctions have been enhanced recently by histopathologic study of the acantholytic changes in the epidermis. These 2 features, namely the clinical examination and the histopathologic changes noted in cutaneous biopsy, have been employed in this present study to amplify the understanding of pemphigus foliaceus.Recent clinical experience with patients diagnosed as having either pemphigus erythematodes (Senear-Usher syndrome) or pemphigus foliaceus indicates that many features are common to both conditions. A single plaque of blisters, scaling papules or erosions, frequently on the scalp, face, thorax, or back, is commonly present for weeks to months, or even years, prior to the development of numerous lesions in these same regions or in even more generalized areas over the body. Persistence of lesions in previously involved zones is characteristic.In both

Vesicular and bullous dermatitis among celery harvesters became a subject of special interest to us in early 1959. The stimulus was occasioned by an inquiry from a Michigan practitioner1who wanted to know why the celery harvesters in his community were developing severe vesicular and bullous lesions, and whether or not contact with disouteased celery could be the cause of the eruption. Not having investigated any outbreaks of occupational dermatitis from celery, we reviewed the medical literature available to us. At the time, all of the references consulted emphasized the cutaneous sensitizing capacity of celery oil. Shortly thereafter, Dr. H. A. Tucker,2well-known for his interest in psoralens and radiant energy, suggested that photosensitivity to furocoumarins or psoralens contained in celery might account for the dermatitis observed in Michigan. From 1950 to 1953, an increase in the incidence of tinea capitis was noticed in the Dermatology Clinic at the Medical College of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C. It was decided to undertake a survey of the elementary schools in the city in an effort to determine the amount of tinea capitis in the school children, and to curb a further increase in the number of infections.Although this survey was made 6 years ago, the information is deemed worthy of report, since no other survey of this type has been made in this area because of a striking difference in the number of infections in Negroes and whites and because so many of the infections were found to be without clinical symptoms.Procedure for SurveyThe 4 Negro and 5 white schools in the city were visited, and a total of 6,554 children between the ages of 6 and

The evident relationship between mast cells and tumors of various tissues and organs is a fascinating enigma. The association of mast cells with naturally occurring skin tumors, a subject which has not received much previous attention, was examined in the present study.Material and MethodsTen % aqueous formalin-fixed specimens of human skin which embraced both the tumor and the contiguous tissue (the term "contiguous tissue" as used in this paper refers to the dermal, but not the epidermal, tissue adjoining the tumors), the diagnosis having been made on sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin, were sectioned and treated with 0.01% toluidine blue.1We have found aqueous formalin to be a serviceable fixative for mast cells in human skin despite objections which have sometimes been raised to its use.1The types and numbers of tumors examined were as follows:The mast cells in each tumor and in the contiguous
