A thorough understanding of the sonographic development of the embryo and the extraembryonic structures is crucial in differentiating normal from abnormal. Summary:After establishing that a first trimester pregnancy is intrauterine, sonography is used to determine whether the pregnancy has failed or may have an abnormal outcome. Sometimes a definitive diagnosis can be made with a single scan, and other times serial sonography is necessary. This article will review the findings of the abnormal first trimester pregnancy and correlate with laboratory and clinical findings.

Summary:Ultrasound is the modality of choice for initially evaluating the kidneys in many clinical situations including investigating patients with acute onset of flank pain, hematuria, obstructive voiding symptoms, and the indeterminate renal mass. Using a systemic approach, ultrasound can be useful in the identification and differentiation of a renal mass or signs of renal obstruction. Both solid and cystic renal masses can be detected with ultrasound and often further differentiated into either a probable malignant or a benign category such as renal cell carcinoma, angiomyolipoma, metastases, simple renal cyst, or complex renal cyst. Numerous normal variants, developmental anomalies, and pitfalls exist in the ultrasonic diagnosis of renal masses or renal obstructive disease that can be defined or excluded with the addition of other ultrasound techniques. Newer ultrasound techniques show promise in the evaluation of a renal mass or pelvicaliectasis and include power Doppler ultrasound, intraoperative ultrasound, three‐dimensional ultrasound, native tissue harmonic imaging, and ultrasound contrast agents.
