摘要:
SummaryAbnormalities of the CNS represent the most common birth defects and can result in fetuses with some of the most severe handicaps. The measurement of serum alpha-fetoprotein has been instituted in many centers to identify women whose fetuses are at risk for neural tube abnormalities. In addition, sonography has progressed recently, not only in development of newer and more sophisticated equipment, but also in the sonologists' expertise in diagnosing these anomalies. Until recently, only the most severe CNS defects, such as anencephaly or severe hydrocephalus, could be accurately detected. Now, even the most subtle changes in intracranial anatomy and small neural tube defects can be found prenatally. It is not necessarily the patient at risk for an abnormality who is carrying a fetus with a CNS defect. It is therefore important for the sonographer to be familiar with normal and abnormal intracranial anatomy, so that anomalous fetuses can be accurately diagnosed. The presence of a CNS birth defect can dramatically change obstetrical management, including moving the delivery to a tertiary care center equipped with a special care nursery, planning for early intervention, or preparing for a disastrous outcome where treatment is not indicated. A correct diagnosis, therefore, of CNS and associated abnormalities is necessary for adequate planning and proper counseling of the patients during their pregnancies.

摘要:
SummarySonography is a useful imaging modality in the evaluation of tropical diseases. This article deals with the role of sonography in the diagnosis of various tropical diseases like tuberculosis, amoebiasis, and other parasitic infestations as seen in the tropics. The manifestations of tuberculosis in the liver, spleen, kidneys, retroperitoneum, serous cavities, and pelvic organs are described. The evolution and complications of amoebic abscess and hydatid disease are also discussed. The life cycle of various parasites and the sonographic detection of their manifestations are reviewed along with a brief account of the sonographic features of biliary asca-riasis, filariasis, leptospirosis, and malaria.
