Summary—The daily urinary excretion of calcium, oxalate, uric acid and glycosaminoglycans, and 24‐h urinary volume and pH, were measured in 39 normal men and 65 male patients who had formed at least one calcium oxalate stone. No significant difference could be found between the two groups of subjects with respect to any of the urinary parameters. Nonetheless, a higher proportion of stone‐formers than normals had daily excretion levels of oxalate in excess of the normal 95th percentile. On the other hand, there was no difference between the proportion of stone‐formers and normals who fell into this category with respect to calcium excretion.It was concluded that a single 24‐h urine analysis is of limited practical value in explaining the occurrence of stones or in predicting the likelihood of further episodes in unselected stone‐formers attending a general hospital outpat

Summary—The Specific Red Cell Adherence Test (SRCAT) has been modified to produce clearer, more consistent, permanent preparations. Normal urothelium, inflammatory lesions, squamous metaplasia, papillomata, flatin situand papillary tumours and invasive neoplasms of the bladder have been studied. Summary—Thirty‐eight cases of large bladder diverticula treated surgically between 1970 and 1979 were reviewed. Twenty‐two underwent diverticulectomy alone and 19 of these had no further trouble during a follow‐up period averaging 4.5 years. Three other patients who had undergone resection of a small prostate gland prior to diverticulectomy might also have been cured by diverticulectomy alone. In at least half of the patients presenting with large bladder diverticula no obstructive factor was present and it is concluded that primary diverticula are more common than was previously thought.Clinically, primary diverticula may be distinguished from secondary on the basis of symptoms, cystoscopic findings of trabeculation and urodynamic studies. Summary—In a prospective study using a portable real time ultrasound scanner, 82 estimations of the bladder volume were made in male patients with neurogenic bladder and these were compared in each case with the measured volume of urine obtained by catheterisation performed immediately after estimation. A further 25 estimations/measurements were made in patients in whom the bladder volume was less than 150 ml. Summary—The initial slope of the curve relating peak urinary flow rate to voided volume was found to predict an individual's flow rate at bladder volumes of 200 ml or more in normal subjects and Those with symptoms of outflow obstruction. The numerical value of this initial slope was found to decline in a hyperbolic fashion with increasing age. Summary—In a randomised double‐blind cross‐over trial of 19 females with motor urge incontinence but without bladder suspension defect, the effects of 14 days' treatment with emepronium bromide 200 mg qid, flavoxate chloride 200 mg qid or placebo qid were compared by means of micturition charts, the patients' drug preferences and evaluation of side effects.Placebo was the only drug giving rise to a statistically significant decrease in the frequency of voidings, incontinence and nocturia. Forty‐seven per cent of the patients preferred placebo and side effects were less frequent during treatment with this medication. Summary—Fresh hyperplastic prostate glands from 19 patients who underwent open prostatectomy were weighed and their volume measured. After a simulated transurethral resection the weight and the volume of the pieces were determined. The volume of each enucleated specimen was plotted against the volume after electroresection. The regression coefficient was 0.8039. Similarly, the regression coefficient for the weight was 0.7864. Therefore a diminution in volume and weight of approximately 20% can be expected after electroresection. The specific weight close to one remained unchanged. Summary—The serum concentration of testosterone, luteinising hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and prolactin were determined at different intervals after withdrawal of oestrogen treatment in patients with prostatic carcinoma. Oestrogen therapy had been stopped in all patients because of the side effects of oestrogens. There was a negative correlation (r= ‐0.64) between serum testosterone concentrations and the duration of oestrogen treatment in patients investigated for more than 6 months after withdrawal of hormones. However, the decrease in testosterone concentration seems to be time‐dependent. Thus patients who were treated for less than 3 years had normal testosterone concentrations approximately 6 months after withdrawal of the oestrogen therapy. This group of patients had a positive correlation (r= 0.49) between serum testosterone concentration and time elapsed after cessation of therapy. In contrast, patients treated for more than 3 years retained low testosterone concentrations even after 6 months. The other hormones did not vary between the groups.
