摘要:
It is shown that a group of two-level atoms initially in the de-excited state induce squeezing in a coherent single-mode field. This effect occurs at the onset of interaction, and so could be more easily observed than the delayed effect predicted in the corresponding maser system.

摘要:
The bistable behaviour of a two-beam interferometer based on an absorbing beam-splitter yielding in-phase interference outputs is pointed out. A primitive prototype exhibiting successive bistable loops with a continuous-wave beam of milliwatt powers and arbitrary wavelength is also described.

摘要:
A systematic approach to the use of entropy as a measure of noise and order in quantum optical fields is developed. The general definition of entropy, adopting the density matrix, is expressed in terms of both the eigenvalues of this operator and the quasidistribution function related to antinormal ordering of the field operators. Special states of optical fields, such as the Fock state, the coherent state, the chaotic state, single-mode and multimode two-photon coherent states, squeezed states and the shifted gaussian state, including the time development under a particular interaction, are considered. The general conclusions reached are illustrated by numerical results.

摘要:
The resonance fluorescence spectrum of one and two two-level atoms in an ideal cavity with one resonant mode is investigated as a function of the initial excitation of the system. The analysis is carried out in the Stark representation with respect to the cavity's field and in first-order perturbation theory with respect to the fluorescence field. In the absence of the field of the cavity (nc= 0) and under an initial excitation of one atom only, the spectrum consists of two lines which are symmetrical with respect to ωa. In all other cases the spectrum has a central line at ωaand other lines at ωa± 2 Ω. The intensity of the higher (ωa± 4 Ω) harmonics is small and decreases as 1/2cc with increasingn>c. The nonlinearity of the interaction hamiltonian results in the parametric (with respect to the field of the cavity) amplification of the ωa+ 2 Ω harmonic and the attenuation of the ωa− 2 Ω harmonic. The stimulated emission of the ωa± 2 Ω harmonics, vanishing in a strong (nc» 1) field, is shown to exist for two atoms.

摘要:
Photon correlation techniques are applied to the problem of phase measurement by heterodyne interferometry. The use of photon correlation makes measurement of phase possible at very low light levels. A noise analysis is presented and the results are used to indicate the limits of accuracy due to photon noise and experimental factors. Experimental results are presented and compared with the predictions of the theory.

摘要:
The problem of incoherent imaging of extended objects by optical systems which change the state of light polarization is discussed in detail. The optical transfer function of the system has been determined for two cases, i.e. for objects which emit similarly and differently polarized light. For the second case it was necessary to introduce the vectorial optical transfer function (OTF). Numerical calculations of the OTF have been performed for a perfect system with a simple polarizing mask in the exit pupil.

摘要:
The propagation of light pulses with partial spatial and temporal coherence is analysed. It is shown that the introduction of the second-order coherence function enables the description of both spatial and temporal radiation characteristics to be described in the angular spectrum approach. A strong correlation between the spatial and temporal parameters is obtained.

摘要:
A general relation between thenth-order intensity moments and the coefficients of aberration for an incoherent imaging system are presented. The symmetry properties of aberrations influence the various moments in different ways. The zero-order moment is independent of aberration. The other moments,M10,M01,M11,M20andM30, are related in a characteristic manner to the various coefficients of aberration.
