摘要:
Summary. An illustrated account is given of the parasitic fauna of vertebrates in certain lakes and streams in Eastern Canada. The general ecology of each area is described briefly. The Entozoa and Ectozoa of the vertebrates examined are listed. Some morphological features of some of the parasites are briefly noted and some general considerations concerning their nomenclature are presented. The presence of the Haplosporidian,Ichthyosporidiumsp., in speckled trout,Salvelinus fontinalis, is reported for the first time in Canada. The developmental stages observed are described and illustrated.Variation as observed in certain of the Entozoa is considered. Size variations from host to host are noted, also morphological variations as seen among the Trematoda.Echinorhynchus lateralisis considered, both in regard to positional variations shown by the cement glands of the male and to the disparity in numbers of the sexes when large numbers are examined. Some observations on its period of survival, and of its eggs, outside the host are given. The effects of various Protozoa and Helminthes on their hosts are described. The economic significance of the parasites of the freshwater fishes examined is discussed.

摘要:
A series of seventeen examples ofA. sylvaticuswas collected by Mr. P. A. Clancey, M.B.O.U., between 22. xi. 1944 and 24. iii. 1945 from the Po valley plains of Emilia, North Italy. The localities from which the specimens were obtained were Faenza, Forli and Bagnacavallo. These were so distinctively pale in colour that I was led to compare them with a hundred and six Field Mice in my own collection and sixty‐two in the British Museum collection, from neighbouring regions, as follows: Apulia, S. Italy 49, Switzerland 16, South and S.E. France 29, Yugoslavia 28 and Gt. Britain 5

摘要:
Summary and Conclusions. The occurrence, habitat, proportions of the sexes, and population distribution in different zones of the int(ertida1 region in Patella vulgata Linnaeus, on thoNorth Side of Cullercoats Bay, are described.Five main conclusions can be drawn from our investigations 011 the biology of Patella vulgata a t Cullercoats:1. Patella vulgata occurs mainly between the L.W.S. and tlie H.W.S. levels. It is, however, found in diminishing numbers right up to the wash zone (about 2 feet above the H.W.S.)on sides of rocks facing North‐East and East. The factor determining the upper limit of distribution is probably the absence of suitable food‐plants.2. In general the population increases from the high‐water to the low‐water mark; but the maximum population density occurs at low water neaps. At higher levels the larger sizes are predominant, while at lower levels it is the smller sizes which are most numerous. The largest sizes (46–60 mm.), however, are found more usually near the Gigartim belt of L.W.S. or on the margins of rock‐pools from L.W.S. t o M.T.L.3. The ratio of the males to fema1es varies inversely as the degree of exposure. The lower we go from the high‐water mark, the larger is the population of males. The larger males (i.e., persistent males) ‐are inore common in the higher zones, while the larger females are found more at lower zones of the coast.4. First Inaturity in P. vulgata occurs at a size of 10 mm. when all indi‐viduals with gonads are males; i.e., all P. vulqato are male at first matwity. The first females appear at sizes 12–15 mm., which we have considered the transition stage, and go on increasing in number gradually until the size‐group 21–25 min. is reached. Sbove this size there is asudden increase in tlic!percentage of females, which become more numerous until a t a size of 56‐40 mm they form about 8Oyh of the population. Correspondingly, there i s a suddendrop in the percentage of inales a t size 21‐25mm., above which size they become less numerous, until at a size of 56–60 mm. they form only 20% of the population. A 50; 50 proportion of, males to females is obtained only in the size‐group 3640 mm.5. The ratio Of males to females in the total popzllation is about 3: J., i.e., during September and October, 1946, at Cullercoats there were three functioning niale

摘要:
During the year under consideration the Society's Collection has increased greatly in size, the stock of animals having been built up very much from the reduced numbers kept during the late war. Particular mention must be made of the large collections brought in by Mr. Frost in July and by Messrs. Tanner and Webb in October. In addition to these, many smaller collections and individual animals have been sent in by such friends of the Society as Mr. Cansdale from the Gold Coast and Mr. Mitchell from Nyasaland. Table 1 shows the number of animals in stock on December 31st, 1945, and December 31st, 1946, with the increase in stock for each type.

摘要:
During 1946, the number of specimens of animal faeces examined microscopically and reported upon for detection of Entozoa was 56. Repeat examinations were frequently made, most of which are not included in this number. Concentration methods and washing of samples for worms were usually done. Forty‐two mammals, one Python, also were examined, many from collections newly arrived from Africa. In the list of Entozoa and the hosts harbouring them, the popular name of the host is given where it occurs for the first tim

摘要:
The following table represents the results of an examination of birds which died in the Society's Gardens between 1939–1946. In no case can the numbers of Mallophaga be regarded as a total count, though the proportion of sexes is probably correct. In the majority of cases the genus only is given. The correct naming of each species would entail a review of each genu
