摘要:
SUMMARY.1A description is given of the topography and vegetation of Bwamba County, Uganda, an area where human yellow fever has recently occurred. The county is mainly low‐lying and is extensively forested. It lies in the extreme west of Uganda, and includes part of the edge of the Ituri Forest.2The zoogeography of the mosquito fauna is discussed and it is shown that Bwamba belongs to the faunistic district known as the Lower Guinea Forest.3It is pointed out that the behaviour of well‐known species of mosquitoes in forest areas may differ from that usually considered normal.Aëdes ægyptiandAnopheles gambiæare taken as examples, and evidence is given to show that in Bwamba these species, normally considered to be domestic and homophilic, appear to be largely sylvan and zoo

摘要:
SUMMARY.This paper deals with the type‐localities of mammals. The area covered is that enclosed within the political boundaries of the Tanganyika Territory, together with the adjacent islands comprising the Zanzibar Protectorate. With two exceptions, no localities lying outside this area are mentioned.Type‐localities are considered alphabetically. After the description of a type‐locality follows a list of the species and sub‐species described from that locality. Alternate and obsolete names are included. To those interested in statistics it may be recorded that this paper contains 217 localities of which 38 are obsolete or alternate names or cross‐references, leaving a balance of 179 actual type‐localities. The names of 304 species and sub‐species which have been described from the above area are given, of which the large number of 98 have been described wholly or in part by the German systematist, Dr. P. Matschie.A result of the lack of suitable books of reference during the compilation of this paper is that it has been impossible to come to any definite conclusions concerning the exact type‐localities of about ten species. It is hoped that these outstanding problems will be cleared up

摘要:
SUMMARY.An account is given of the microfauna found in 93 samples of mosses from 18 localities in the Province of Quebec, one from New Brunswick, one fromNova Scotia and one from the Adirondacks in the United States. Species ofRhizopoda, Heliozoa, Mastigophora and Ciliata are summarised and the presence of associated microfauna such as Rotifera, Nematoda and Tardigrada is notified. In all 108 species of Sarcodina, 42 of Mastigophora and 40 species of Ciliata have been encountered. The microfauna of each moss sample is set forth, the mosses being grouped for each locality.Comparisons are made of the microfauna of the species of Sphagnaceæ, Polytrichaceæ, Dicranaceæ, Bryacoæ and Hypnaceæ examined.A quantative enumerative study of the micropopulations of a number of the mosses was made and the results are summarised. Huge numbers of Protozoa in many mosses are disclosed.Giant strains of some Testacea are notified. Some survival data of Protozoa found in Canadian mosses are given.Comparison is made of the Protozoal fauna of some of the Canadian mosses with those of the same species of moss in the United States and Europe. Some general observations, mainly physiological and distributional, in connection with the microfauna of the Canadian mosses are prese

摘要:
SUMMARY.1The developmental potencies of blastoderms and fragments separated latitudinally during the cleavage stages of the egg of the goldfish have been studied.2At the 1‐ and 2‐cell stages hyperblastuJæ represent the highest differentiation attained by fragments separated at or above the equator. Fragments of the same size isolated at the 4‐ to 16‐cell stage may give rise to perfect or nearly perfect embryos.3Blastoderms removed before the 8‐cell stage form hyperblastulæ as their highest differentiation. Those removed at the 8‐cell stage, or later, show differentiation of embryonic structure or give rise to typical embryos.4The results are explained by the existence in the periblast of a substance necessary for gastrulation and for the organization of the embryo. This substance is located unilaterally below the equator before, or just after, the first cleavage; it flows up and passes through the latter during, or after, the 2‐cell stage, and finally enters the blastoderm during, or possibly after, the 4‐cell stage.5In hyperblastulæ, epithelium and abortively self‐differentiated nervous, notochordal and mesodermal tissues arise in the absence of gastrulation.6Among the imperfect embryos there is a gradation of abnormalities ranging from embryos with a defective fore‐brain to trunk‐like and tail‐like bodies: Considerable differentiation of tissues and organs takes place, though all types of structure do not necessarily occur, in a single individual, or are arranged in proper relationship to each other.7A nerve cord may be developed independently in the absence of a notochord. Regularly arranged mesodermal rings are often formed unassoeiated with nervous tissue.8Defects in the fore‐brain may result in failure of the development of optic cups. In spite of the absence of the latter, the lens may be formed, perhaps by self‐differentiation.9The presence of considerable powers of self‐differentiation of the embryonic cells of teleostean eggs, as well as the organizing action exerted by the organization centre, suggest that the normal process of development in teleosts is the result of the int

摘要:
Mr. Tetley, who died on September26, 1944, had been working on various British Mammals, and the notes and measurements detailed below were being prepared for publication at the time of his death. It is considered that the data will be of value to future workers and should, therefore, be put on record, especially as some of the specimens concerned are no longer available for examination, having been lost as a result of enemy action.
