摘要:
At a time when scientists contribute to and, at times, seem likely to be overwhelmed by an information explosion, one might pardonably question the need for another journal; particularly another journai of an ecological nature. Too often, however, land, sea and fresh water are treated as if they do not interact, and chemistry, although a driving force in ecological systems, is either viewed as an impact upon parts rather than the whole system, or ignored completely: an attitude which is the despair of chemists and a grave loss to ecologists. Indeed, i t would seem, particularly in the marine field, that biologists/ecologists are falling far behind the chemists and this is a loss to the scientific community as a whole. One outcome is a lack of the wider view and those attempts to theorise which are necessary to progress in the subject. While not forgetting that an understanding of the component parts is vital to an understanding of the whole, Chemistry in Ecology will seek to promote the wider view, and in so doing try to create “bridges” between studies which have not been allied hitherto, but may advantageously work together in the future.

摘要:
As part of its work on marine environmental protection the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food's, Fisheries Laboratory at Burnham-on-Crouch, undertook a mussel survey in England and Wales in 1978. Trace metal, organochlorine pesticide and PCB residue concentrations were determined. The survey comprised about 80 samples covering the whole of England and Wales.

Citrulline, one of the forms in which fixed nitrogen is assimilated in free-living blue-green algae and additionally in the blue-green algae/cycad symbiosis inMacrozamia, is similarly assimilated in the nitrogen fixing root nodules ofAlnus glutinosa. By investigating the localisation of ornithine carbamoyl transferase in both cases it has been shown that in these symbiotic systems the ornithine carbamoyl transferase is only active in host tissue. This suggests that the host exerts an influence on the assimilation of fixed nitrogen in the microsymbiont resulting in the blocking of the enzyme trans-carbamylase with the subsequent excretion of the fixed nitrogen as ammonia to the host for further assimilation. This is discussed in the light of work on nitrogen metabolism in other symbiotic relationships involving nitrogen fixing organisms, where the effect of altering the habitat of the micro-organism has in fact resulted in a change in its metabolism.

The Clyde Estuary is recognised as an important area for overwintering flocks of ducks and waders (Smythet al., 1974. Here we draw attention to some of the spatial and temporal variations in the invertebrate populations on which these birds feed. Smythet al.(1977) discuss possible relationships between the bird populations and their invertebrate prey. A 12-month survey, 1976–77, provides the main information on numbers of feeding birds (Halliday, 1978), complemented by sampling over the estuarine flats for invertebrate prey species and for chemical environmental factors: salinity, organic carbon, organic nitrogen, dissolved oxygen, as well as sediment grades. Although there is no constant monitoring shceme for the estuarine flats, a series of surveys provide data over the period 1973–1981.

While investigating the effect of fluoride on the green alga,Enteromorpha, healthy chains of the centric diatom,Melosira nummuloidesappeared in cultures containing a small piece ofEnteromorpha, nutrient medium and all concentrations of fluoride, as Na2SiF6to 160 p.p.m. Both theMelosiraalone and theEnteromorpha, accompanied byMelosira, were transferred into a culture medium (germ intercepting filtrate, S=30g./kg. to which 0.4 ml./1. of the plant nutrient ‘Kerigrow’ was added) with a normal fluoride content; after three weeks theMelosiraalone was present only in short, broken chains, whereas that in the presence ofEnteromorphahad formed long, healthy chains.
