摘要:
Silicone right atrial catheters (Broviac and Hickman), initially used for the administration of home total parenteral nutrition, are now used to provide venous access for patients requiring other types of long-term intravenous therapy. Safe and successful use of the Broviac and Hickman catheters depends upon the knowledgeable and skillful management of a multidisciplinary team. As with any central venous catheter, certain risks are inherent, but preventable.

The Broviac catheter is being used to provide long-term venous access in patients requiring chemotherapy, total parenteral nutrition, and blood components. Specially modified procedures for irrigation of the catheter and dressing changes have been developed to facilitate staff education as well as patient and family teaching.
