SummaryA large series of cases of Rhesus Haemolytic Disease of the Newborn, representing almost complete ascertainment within a community, is examined with particular attention to the distribution of the ABO blood groups among parents and affected children. The concept of protection against rhesus‐sensitization through maternal/foetal incompatibility is examined in detail. The hypothesis is confirmed in general but additional points emerge.ABO incompatibility probably plays an additional subsiduary role at the immunization stage and at later stages of the process.There is evidence that, in addition, infants of blood group O are affected severely and infants of blood group B relatively mildly.Some differences were noted in group O mothers; and with the birth rank of the first affected infant in the family.RésuméUne grande série de cas de maladies hémolytiques du nouveau‐né par incompatibilité‐Rhésus, représentant un échantilonnage le plus complet possible d'une communauté donnée, a été examinée en considérant particulièrement la distribution des groupes sanguins ABO chez les parents et chez les enfants malades. La protection contre la sensibilisation du type Rhésus par une incompatibilité foeto‐maternelle d'un autre type a été examinée en détail. D'une manière générale, cette hypothèse a été confirmée, mais des constatations complémentaires ont été faites.Il est fort probable qu'une incompatibilité ABO joue un rôle complémentaire au stade de l'immunisation et lors des stades successifs du processus.En outre, il est clair que les enfants de groupe O sont atteints gravement et les enfants de groupe B sont atteints d'une manière plus bénigne.On a observé des différences chez les mères de groupe O en ce qui concerne le rang de naissance du premier enfant atteint de la maladie, dans une même famille.ZusammenfassungEs wurde ein umfassendes Krankengut von Rh‐bedingtem Morbus haemolyticus neonatorum, welches praktisch alle Fälle einer größeren Gegend enthält, im Hinblick auf die Verteilung der ABO‐Blutgruppen bei den Eltern und den von der Krankheit betroffenen Kindern ausgewertet. Das Konzept des Schutzes vor Rh‐Sensibilisierung durch eine zwischen Mutter und Fetus bestehende ABO‐Inkompatibilität wird im Einzelnen dargelegt. Die Hypothese wird im großen ganzen bestätigt; immerhin gelang es zusätzliche Gesichtspunkte ausfindig zu machen.So spielt die ABO‐Inkompatibilität wahrscheinlich eine zusätzliche Rolle sowohl zur Zeit der Immunisierung als auch zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt.Im weiteren zeigte sich, daß Kinder der Gruppe O meist schwer, solche der Gruppe B meist nur leicht erkranken.Auch in der Gruppe der O‐Mütter wurden geringgradige Unterschiede beobachtet; dasselbe gilt für die Ste

Summary1Human erythrocyte stroma has been shown to maintain its Rh specificity following lyophilization.2The ability of D + lyophylized red cell ghosts to consume specific anti‐D antibody has been shown to exhibit sensitivity to temperature, pH levels below 5.8 and above 9.2, and to a variety of proteolytic enzymes.3Several thiols in high concentrations were observed to so affect D+ LCG as to abolish its ability to consume specific anti‐D.4Several sulfhydryl binding reagents abolished antibody consumption. This effect could be prevented by supplying excess thiol at the same time. The loss in antibody consumption due to p‐chloromercuribenzoate was reversible.5These properties were shared by the single other antigen of the Rh system studied, namely C.6A and B activities, as measured by specific antibody consumption, were completely unaffected by these reagents.Résumé1Les stromas d'érythrocytes humains conservent leur spécificité Rhésus à la suite de lyophilisation.2Les stromas érythrocytaires lyophilisés D + démontrent avoir une propriété de consommer l'anticorps anti‐D spécifique. Cette propriété est sensible à la température, au pH en‐dessous de 5,8 et au‐dessus de 9,2 et à certains types d'enzymes protéolytiques.3De nombreux thiols à haute concentration agissent sur les stromas érythrocytaires lyophilisés D+ au point d'abolir leur aptitude à consommer l'anti‐D spécifique.4De nombreuses substances réagissant par liaison des groupes sulphydryls suppriment la consommation de l'anticorps. Cet effet peut être empêché en ajoutant un excès du thiol au même moment. La suppression de la consommation de l'anticorps par le p‐chloromercuribenzoate est réversible.5Ces propriétés sont aussi présentes chez les autres antigènes du système Rhésus, plus particulièrement chez l'antigène C.6Les activités A et B mesurées par la consommation d'anticorps spécifiques ne sont, en aucune manière, modifiées par ces réactifs.Zusammenfassung1Die Rh‐Spezifität von menschlichem Erythrozytenstroma wird durch Lyophilisation nicht beeinträchtigt.2Die Fähigkeit D‐positiver lyophilisierter Erythrozytenstromata zur spezifischen Bindung von Anti‐D‐Antikörpern erwies sich als empfindlich auf Temperatur, pH‐Werte unter 5,8 und über 9,2 sowie auf eine Reihe proteolytischer Enzyme.3Verschiedene Thiole unterdrückten in hoher Konzentration die Fähigkeit der Stromata zur spezifischen Anti‐D‐Bindung.4Verschiedene sulfhydrylbindende Reagentien unterdrückten die Antikörper‐bindung. SummaryThe results of red cell agglutination, absorption, elution and saliva inhibition tests with five sera containing anti‐Lea+ Leb(Leab) antibodies are reported and discussed. One of them, in addition to agglutinating cord cells, also agglutinates adult Le(a—b—) and OhLe(a—b—) red cells and therefore contains a second antibody. It is postulated that these sera contain antibodies to an antigen present in Le(a—b—) cells and sese lele salivas. H lele salivas contain an antigen which inhibits two anti‐O sera.RésuméLes résultats de tests d'hémaglutination, d'absorption, d'élution et d'inhibition par la salive obtenus avec 5 sérums contenant des anticorps anti Lea+ Leb(Leab) sont mentionnés et discutés dans ce travail. Parmi ces sérums, l'un d'entre eux agglutine non seulement les érythrocytes du cordon mais aussi les érythrocytes adultes Le(a —b—) et OhLe(a —b—); par conséquent, il contient un second anticorps. On postule que ces sérums contiennent des anticorps à l'égard d'un antigène présent dans les érythrocytes Le(a—b—) et dans les salives sese lele. SummaryThe sera of 73 children with Cooley's anaemia, 67 of whom had received multiple blood transfusions, were tested for the Gm groups and anti‐Gm antibodies.The obtained data are as follows:1The frequencies of the Gm(a), (b), and (x) factors among the thalassemic population and healthy individuals from the Italian district of Ferrara were analogous.2The incidence of anti‐Gm(a), (b), and (x) agglutinating antibodies among multiply transfused patients with thalassemia major was 43%. No anti‐Gm(c), (e), (f), and (r) antibody was detected in any of our samples.3Antibody formation against gamma‐globulin increased proportionately with the number of transfusions and with the severity of the disease.4Experimental transfusions of Gm incompatible whole blood caused no side effect in four patients possessing anti‐Gm agglutinating sera.5The latex fixation test was found to be positive in six patients whose serum contained anti‐Gm agglutinators. On the contrary, negative results were observed in all the controls.Finally it is suggested that the anti‐Gm sera from multiply transfused people present, in some cases, properties which put them in the middle between Ragg and SNagg sera.RésuméOn a déterminé dans les sérums de 73 enfants atteints d'anémie de Cooley, dont 67 avaient reçu de nombreuses transfusions, les groupes Gm et les anticorps anti‐Gm. Les résultats obtenus sont les suivants:1La fréquence des facteurs Gm(a), Gm(b) et Gm(x) parmi la population thalassémique et des individus en bonne santé du district de Ferrare, en Italie, sont absolument similaires.2La fréquence des anticorps agglutinant anti‐Gm(a), anti‐Gm(b) et anti‐Gm(x) parmi les patients atteints de thalassémie majeure et transfusés est de 43%. Parmi nos échantillons, nous n'avons détecté aucun anti‐Gm(c), anti‐Gm(e), anti‐Gm(f) et anti‐Gm(r).3La formation des anticorps contre les gamma‐globulines augmente proportionnellement avec le nombre de transfusions et avec la gravité de la maladie.4Des transfusions expérimentales de sang complet incompatible au point de vue Gm n'ont causé aucun effet secondaire chez 4 patients possédant, dans leur sérum, un anti‐Gm agglutinant.5Le test de fixation au latex a été trouvé positif chez 6 patients dont le sérum contenait des anti‐Gm. Au contraire, on a obtenu des résultats négatifs chez tous les témoins.On suggère enfin que les sérums anti‐Gm chez les polytransfusés présentent dans certains cas des propriétés qui peuvent se situer entre les propriétés des sérums Ragg et des sérums SNagg.ZusammenfassungDie Seren von 73 Kindern mit Cooley Anämie, von denen 67 mehrfach transfundiert worden waren, wurden auf ihre Gm‐Gruppen sowie auf die Anwesenheit von Anti‐Gm‐Antikörpern untersucht. Die Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchungen lassen sich wie folgt zusammenfassen:1Die Häufigkeitsverteilung der Gm(a), (b) und (x)‐Faktoren war bei den Tha‐lassämieträgera dieselbe, wie bei Gesunden aus der Gegend von Ferrara.2Die Häufigkeit agglutinierender Anti‐Gm(a), (b) und (x)‐Antikörper betrug bei den polytransfundierten Thalassämia major Patienten 43%. Anti‐Gm(c), (e), (f) und (r)‐Antikörper wurden in unserem Untersuchungsgut nicht gefunden.3Die Bildung von Antikörpern gegen Gammaglobulin nahm proportional mit der Zahl der Transfusionen sowie mit der Schwere des Krankheitsbildes zu.4Die Transfusion von Gm‐inkompatiblem Vollblut wurde von vier Patienten mit agglutinierenden Anti‐Gm‐Antikörpern reaktionslos ertragen.5Bei sechs Patienten mit Anti‐Gm‐Agglutininen war der Latextest positiv, bei den Kontrollseren war der Latextest ausnahmslos negativ.Die Annahme ist naheliegend, daß Anti‐Gm‐Seren von p

Summary157 sera from pregnant women have been examined and 2 precipitating antibodies with Ag specificity have been detected, one in the serum of a puerpera after the 7th delivery and one in the serum of a woman after the 6th delivery. Neither of the women had ever received a blood transfusion.Résumé157 sérums provenant de femmes enceintes ont été examinés et on a découvert parmi ces 157 sérums, 2 sérums contenant des anticorps précipitants, avec la spécificité Lp; 1 des sérums provenait d'une femme en couche, après la septième grossesse et l'autre de ces sérums provenait d'une femme après la sixième grossesse. SummaryA comparative study between the non‐haemoglobin stroma S proteins prepared from human andcercopithecuserythrocytes was conducted, by employing quantitative precipitin tests and precipitin tests in agar.Evidence is supplied to prove that the above mentioned S proteins give a different number of precipitation bands, which show a common antigenic determinant causing a reaction of partial identity.RésuméUne étude comparative entre les protéines S non hémoglobiniques du stroma préparées à partir d'érythrocytes humains et d'érythrocytes du cercopithecus a été pratiquée au moyen de tests de précipitation quantitatifs et de tests de précipitation en gélose d'agar.
