SummaryThe new Kell family antigen Kpbis described. It is recognized by a high titered antibody (anti‐Kpb) that was found in the serum of Mr. Rautenberg when he was being crossmatched for a transfusion. Its relation to the other antigens in the Kell family was established by showing that all of five Kpbnegatives are Kpapositive, two of them being demonstrably homozygonsKpaKpa. Kpapositives in the general population are so uncommon (2%) that these five people furnished the necessary proof. Only two Kp(b‐) individuals were found in tests of 5,500 unrelated persons, indicating that the gene frequency ofKpbis probably in excess of 0.98.Investigation of the families of two Kp(b‐) persons revealed still another new gene in the Kell system, which appears to be the same as one found byChown, Lewis, andKaita, which produces no known antigens of the Kell family.There are now four demonstrable antigens in the Kell family: K, k, Kpa, and Kpb. Four different gene combinations have been found:KKpb, kKpa, kKpb, and a gene that is known only asK0(K‐zero). The combinationKKpamay exist, but if so it is very rare. The antibodies generally require the indirect Coombs test for detection. The new antibodies are undoubtedly of clinical importance, though both are rare.There is, probably, much still to be learned about the Kell blood groups.RésuméLes auteurs décrivent un nouvel antigène du système Kell: Kpb. Il est reconnu par un anticorps B haut titre, anti‐Kpb, trouvé dans le sérum d'un malade (Mr. Rautenberg) alors qu'on faisait des tests de compatibilité. Il fut possible de montrer que 5 personnes Kpbnégatives étaient Kpapositives; chez deux d'entre elles le génotype homozygoteKpaKpaput être établi. Vu que le taux de personnes Kpapositives n'est que 2 % de la population, les 5 personnes mentionnees précédemment ont fourni la preuve suffisante de la relation d'allélisme entre Kpaet Kpb. Der diesem Antigen entsprechende Antikörper (Anti‐Kpb) wurde in einem Patientenserum (Mr. Rautenberg) anläßlich einer prätransfusionellen Verträglichkeitsprobe gefunden. Die Bedehung dieses Antigens zum Kell‐System wurde ersichtlich, als festgestellt werden konnte, daß fünf der sehr seltenen Kpb‐negativen Individuen Kpa‐positiv waren. Bei zwei dieser fünf Individuen wurde der homozygote GenotypusKpaKpaermittelt. Da Kpa‐positive Individuen selten sind (etwa 2% der Bevölkerung), genügte der Nachweis, daß fünf Kpb‐negative Individuen das seltene Antigen Kpabe‐sitzen zur statistischen Sicherung der Annahme, daß die Antigene Kpaund Kpbdurch allele Gene bedingt sind. Da bei 5500 unter sich nicht verwandten Individuen nur zwei Kpb‐negative Individuen gefunden wurden, ist anzunehmen, daß die Genfrequenz vonKpbgrößer als 0,98 ist.Die Untersuchung der Familien von zwei Kpb‐negativen Individuen zeigte, daß noch ein weiteres, bisher unbekanntes Gen des Kell‐Systems existieren muß. Dieses scheint mit dem vonChown, LewisundKaitagefundenen Gen identisch zu sein. Dieses Gen bildet keines der bisher bekannten Antigene des Kell‐Systems.Man kennt heute folgende vier Kell‐Antigene: K, k, Kpaund Kpb. Bisher wurden folgende vier Genkombinationen gefunden:KKpb, kKpa, kKpbund das einzig durch die Abwesenheit aller vier Kell‐Antigene charakterisierte GenK° (K‐zero). Wenn die GenkombinationKKpaüberhaupt existiert, so ist sie sehr selten. Die «neuen» Antikörper sind meist nur im Coombstest zu gebrauchen. Sie sind trotz ihres seltenen Vorkommens zweifellos von einer gewissen klinischen Bedeutung.Unsere heutigen Kenntnisse

SummaryUsing the mixed erythrocyte‐leucocyte agglutination reaction the A and B antigens could be shown to be present on human leucocytes. No reaction could be shown with specific anti‐A1serum but a strong reaction was obtained with an anti‐Apreagent.The M antigen as characterised by human anti‐M serum could not be shown. However rabbit anti‐M and anti‐N sera showed MN type antigens to be present. Rabbit anti‐M reacted with leucocytes from M and N persons although more strongly with those of the former. Similarly rabbit anti‐N reacted with leucocytes from persons of both groups although in this case more strongly with those of group N persons.The Rh (D) antigen could not be shown to be present.The Tjaantigen appeared to be present but only a very weak reaction was obtained.Tests on the Lutheran and Lewis antigens were equivocal.Although the tests have been performed on total leucocyte preparations both polymorphonuclear cells and lymphocytes have been observed as being involved. It must also be borne in mind that the leucocyte preparations used had been treated with either acetic acid or saponin prior to being tested for the antigens in question.In conclusion it would appear that human leucocytes are similar to platelets in the blood group antigens they possess in common with red cells.RésuméA l'aide du test d'agglutination mixte érythrocytes‐leucocytes, les auteurs purent mettre en évidence les agglutinogèes A et B chez les leucocytes humains. Avec du sérum spécifique anti‐A1aucune réaction ne fut obtenue, par contre un sérum anti‐APproduisit une forte réaction.L'agglutinogène M, tel qu'il réagit avec de l'anti‐M humain ne put être démontré, mais en se servant d'anti‐M et d'anti‐N de lapin les deux facteurs M et N furent trouvés. L'anti‐M de lapin réagit avec les leucocytes d'individus de groupe M ainsi que de groupe N, quoique plus fortement avec les premiers. De même, l'anti‐N de lapin n'exhiba qu'une spécificité relative. Le facteur Rh D ne put être démontré.L'agglutinogène Tj3s'avéra présent mais la réaction obtenue était très faible. Les tests pour les agglutinogèes Lutheran et Lewis donnèrent des résultats équivoques.ZusammenfassungMit Hilfe der Erythrozyten‐Leukozyten‐Mischagglutinationstechnik gelang es in den Leukozyten die Blutgruppenantigene A und B nachzuweisen. Mit einem spezifischen Anti‐A1‐Serum war die Reaktion negativ, mit einem Anti‐AP‐Serum jedoch stark positiv.Das durch menschliche Anti‐M‐Seren erfaßbare M‐Antigen konnte nicht nachgewiesen werden. Kaninchen Anti‐M‐ und Anti‐N‐Seren reagierten positiv mit Leukozyten von&I‐ und N‐Individuen. Die Anti‐M‐Seren reagierten etwas stärker mit Leukozyten von M‐Individuen als mit solchen von N‐Individuen. Desgleichen reagierten die Anti‐N‐Seren etwas stärker mit Leukozyten yon N‐Individuen als mit solchen von M‐Individuen.Das Rhesusantigen D konnte nicht nachgewiesen werden.Das Tja‐Antigen schien in den Leukozyten enthalten zu sein. Die Reaktionen waren aber nur schwach.Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchungen mit Anti‐Lubund Anti‐LeaSeren waren nicht eindeutig.An den Reaktionen waren sowohl polynukleäe Leukozyten als auch Lymphozyten beteiligt. Bei der Beurteilung der Ergebnisse ist zu berücksichtigen, daß die Leukozytensuspensionen vor der Durchführung der serologischen Reaktionen entweder mit Essigsäure oder mit Saponin behandelt wurden.Zusammenfassend ist festzuhalten, d

SummaryMethods proposed for the determination of properdin are described and evaluated. Preference is given to a modification of the zymosan assay ofPillemer. The properties of zymosan are investigated with the purpose of providing information on the nature of the groups which are responsible for the properdin interactions.In a second part a detailed description of the proposed titration is given.Résumé: Les méthodes proposdes pour le dosage de la properdine sont décrites et évaluées. Préférence a été donnée à me modification du procédé dePillemerbasée sur l'interaction de la properdine avec un derive insoluble de levure (la zymosane). Les propriétés de cette der nière ont été étudiées dans le but d'obtenir des précisions sur les groupements responsables pour l'interaction avec la properdine.Dam la seconde partie, le procédé proposé pour le dosage est discuté en détail.ZusammenfassungDie Methoden zur Bestimmung des Properdins werden beschrieben und ihre Vor‐ und Nachteile erörtert.
