SummaryThe first plant agglutinin was discovered byStillmarkin 1888. It was non‐specific.Landsteinerlater observed a certain degree of species specificity in some plant agglutinins, andBoyd and Renkonenfound some to be blood antigen specific. Various plant hemagglutinins, called “lectins” byBoydhave a number of interesting and sometimes useful specificities: Anti‐A, anti‐A1, anti‐B, anti‐H, anti‐A+B, anti‐B+H, anti‐M, anti‐N, and anti‐Gy (peanut factor). No anti‐Rh lectins have thus far been found.Even the “nonspecific” lectins have specificity in the sense that they combine with certain definitely characterized receptors on the erythrocyte, as demonstrated by inhibition experiments. This is true for example of the lectin fromRieinus communis, the first to be discovered.Lectins are used to subdivide bloods of groups A and AB into subgroups, to diagnose secretors and nonsecretors of the ABH substances, in routine ABH blood grouping, in MN blood grouping, in the separation of A and O erythrocytes, in population studies for the “new” factor Gy, in the stimulation of mytosis in leukocytes, in the search for human blood factors in animals, in the study of the blood group substances, and in investigations of the number of specific receptors on a single erythrocyte.The specificity of the blood‐group‐specific lectins is not always less sharp than that of naturally occurring hemagglutinins, and is sometimes sharper.A number of workers have purified various lectins to a greater or lesser degree, usually by salting out procedures, sometimes by alcohol or acetone precipitation, sometimes done in the cold. Acetonfällung in der Kälte. SummaryThe serological and immunochemical properties of antibodies with anti‐I specificity found in the serum of a patient with high‐titre cold auto‐agglutinins are described.Survival studies with51Cr tagged I and i red cells showed that i cells survived normally and that the I cells had a diminished survival time. The agglutinating and haemolysing antibodies were both β2M globulins. The nature of the positive reaction between the patient's red cells and various anti‐human globulin reagents was studied.Anti‐C' sera contain at least three different antibodies responsible for the agglutination of cold haemolytic anaemia cells, cells sensitized by naturally occurring incomplete cold antibodies and cells sensitized by Lewis antibodies.RésuméLes propriétés sérologiques et immunochimiques des anticorps de spécificité anti‐I trouvés chez un patient présentant un titre élevé d'auto‐agglutinines du type froid sont discutées.Les études de survie d'érythrocytes I et i marqués au51Cr ont démontré que les érythrocytes i survivaient normalement, tandis que les érythrocytes I avaient un temps de survie diminué, Les anticorps hémolysants et agglutinarits étaient tous deux des globulines β2M. La nature de la réaction positive entre les érythrocytes du patient et différents réactifs antiglobuline humaine a été étudiée.Les serums anti‐C' contiennent au moins trois anticorps différents respoilsables de l'agglutination des érythrocytes d'anémie hémolytique du type froid, des érythrocytes sensibilisés par des anticorps froirls «naturrls» incomplets et des érythrocytes sensibilisés par des anticorps anti‐Lewis.ZusammenfassungDie serologischen und immunochemischen Eigenschaften der im Serum einer Patientin mit hochtitrigen Kälteautoagglutininen vorhandenen Antikorpern mit Anti‐I‐Spezifität werden beschrieben.Die Überlebenszeitbestimmung mit Cr‐51‐markierten I‐ und i‐Zellen zeigte, daß die letzteren normal überlebten, während die ersteren eine verkürzte überlebenszeit aufwiesen. Die agglutinierenden wie auch die hämolysierenden Antikörper erwiesen sieh als β2‐M‐Globuline. SummaryThe importance of detecting a deficiency of G‐6‐PD among blood donors is stressed by the authors. SummaryAn incomplete anti‐D serum from a white donor living in England and not having any demonstrable Negro ancestry was found to be capable of detecting Gm‐like with appropriate agglutinating sera.The donor and several members of her family were shown to be Gm‐like(+) Evidence is presented to show that the Gm‐like factor in this family is similar to, but not identical with, the one found in Negroes.RésuméOn a trowé un sérum anti‐D incomplet provenant d'un donneur de race blanchevivant en Angleterre et n'ayant aucune ascendance noire‐capable de mettre en évidence la propriété Gm‐like avec les sérums agglutinants appropriés.Le donneur et plusieurs membres de sa famille sont Gm‐like(+). On démontre, preuve à l'appui, que le facteur Gm‐like présent dans cette famille est très semblable, mais non identique à celui que l'on trouve chez lea noirs.ZusammenfassungBei einem weißen in England lebenden Spender wurde ein inkompletter Anti‐D‐Antikörper gefunden, der sich im Ansatz mit geeigneten agglutinierenden Seren zum Nachweis des Antigens Gm‐like eignete. Beim Spender fehlte jeder Hinweis auf eine negroide Blutzumischung bei seinen Vorfahren.Der Spender sowie mehrere Angehörige seiner Familie erwiesen sich als Gm‐like (+).
