SummaryThe interactions between cells and sera of certain people thought to have D in their red cells and anti‐D in their serum are recorded. SummaryA serum from a 70 year old male Australian aborigine is described which reacts only with enzyme‐treated cells carrying the E antigen. The serum reacts strongly with all E‐positive cells from Caucasian whites, but fails to react with a large number of E‐positive cells from Australian aborigines. Gene frequency analysis and family studies suggest that the E antigen is complex. Caucasian whites are antigenically all E+ET, whereas Australian aborigines may be homozygous E + ET, heterozygous E+ET/E + Etor homozygous E + Et/E + Et. The aboriginal serum studied is a “naturally‐occurring” anti‐ET. Preliminary evidence suggests that anti‐E sera of immune origin from Caucasian whites are principally anti‐E + ET.RésuméLe sérum d'un australien aborigène de 70 ans réagit avec des érythrocytes traités par un enzyme et qui comportent l'antigène E. Ce sérum réagit très fort avec tous les érythrocytes de personnes blanches caucasiennes porteuses de l'antigène E, mais ne réagit pas avec un grand nombre d'australiens aborigènes dont les érythrocytes sont E positif. La fréquence du gène et les études pratiquées sur des familles suggèrent que l'antigène E est complexe. SummaryGroup O donor cells recovered from the circulation of group A or B recipients are agglutinable by a proportion of group O sera, and sometimes by a smaller proportion of group B or A sera, showing that they have taken up A or B substance. The uptake of antigen takes about a fortnight to reach a maximum level and no uptake of antigen could be shown following incubation of group O cells with group A1blood or plasma for 41 hrs. at 37° C in vitro.RésuméLes érythrocytes de donneurs de groupe O récupéré de la circulation de receveurs de groupe A ou B sont agglutinables par certains sérums de groupe O et, parfois, par un petit nombre de sérum de groupe A ou B; ceci démontre que ces érythrocytes récupérés ont accaparé de la substance A ou B. Summary1The fractionation of heparinized plasma obtained from blood remaining in blood‐oxygenators resulted in gamma globulin and albumin identical in yield and quality with those prepared from normal ACD plasma.2No heparin was detected in any of the albumin fractions but in three of the four lots reported, trace amounts of heparin oceurred in the gamma globulin fraction (0.089 mg/ml maximum).3Care must be taken to control the hemoglobin concentration of the plasma by: (a) collecting blood from the machine directly into ACD anticoagulant, and (b) removing the cells as rapidly as possible. Otherwise the resulting albumin is dark colored.4The red‐brown color of the albumin prepared from heparinized plasma of high hemoglobin content is due in part to a hemoglobin‐haptoglobin complex. This complex appears to be more stable to heat than free haptoglobin.5Safe criteria and an adequate record system are required in order to exclude undesirable donors, particularly the patient. Drugs and antibiotics used prior to surgery are significant only when they occur in the final purified blood derivatives.6If the plasma from heparinized blood is pooled with normal ACD plasma in the ratio of its availability (<1:10) the resulting hemoglobin and heparin would be further reduced approximately 10 fold in the purified derivatives.Résumé1Le fractionnement de plasma hépariné obtenu à partir d'un cœur‐poumon artificiel donne des taux de gamma‐globuline et d'albumine identiqnes à ceux obtenus avec du plasma ACD.2On ne trouve aucnne trace d'héparine dans les préparations d'albumine; par contre on retrouve des traces d'héparine parmi 3 des 4 lots étudiés dans la fraction des gamma globulines, (0,089 mg/ml au maximum).3Il faut prendre soin d'éviter une trop forte concentration d'hémoglobine plasmatique:a) en recueillant le sang au sortir de la machine directement en solution anticoagulante ACD; etb) en séparant les érythrocytes le plus rapidement possible. Ce complexe semble être plus stable à la chaleur que l'haptoglobine libre.5Des précautions pour éliminer les donneurs indésirables sont nécessaires, en particulier en ce qui concerne le patient. Hingegen enthielten 3 von 4 Gammaglobulinansätzen Heparinspuren (0,089 mg/ml im Maximum).3Um den Hämoglobingehalt des Heparinplasmas niedrig zn halten, ist es angezeigt, a) das aus der Maschine gewonnene Blut direkt in ACD‐Antikoagulans aufzunehmen und b) die Zellen so rasch als möglich abzutrennen. Wird dies nicht befulgt, ist das aus solchem Plasma gewonnene Albumin dunkelgefärbt.4Die rotbraune Farbe von Albumin, welches aus Heparinplasma mit hohem Hämoglobingehalt gewonnen wurde, beruht teilweise auf einem Hämoglobin‐Haptoglobin‐Komplex. SummaryThe reactions of anti‐mouse rabbit serum with the human O Rh pos. erythrocytes sensitized by 12 various anti‐D antibodies of human origin are described. The antimouse serum detects the anti‐D antibodies as reliably as the compared anti‐human goat serum does. The nature of the species non‐specific reactions is discussed on the basis of the common antigenic determinants of the serum proteins.RésuméL'auteur décrit les réactions du sérum de lapin anti‐souris avec des érythrocytes O Rhésus positifs humains sensibilisés par 12 sérums anti‐D différents d'origine humaine. SummaryThe present study is concerned with the traumatic effects exerted on the blood by several substances used in extra‐corporeal circulation. These substances are 5 kinds of plastics, 6 silicon coats and 7 types of stainless steel. After 6 hours of contact with the substances blood has been examined with respect to: thrombocytes, leukocytes, prothrombin, fibrinogen, hemolysis and plasma potassium; we also measured the amount of protein which remained attached to the surfaces. Among plastics, Hostalen proves to be the least traumatizing and Desicote among silicon coats. For stainless steels their chemical composition has no definite influence. However, unsmoothness of the surfaces results in a marked alteration of the thrombocytes and leukocytes.RésuméLe présent travail étudie l'effet traumatique exercé sur le sang par des matériaux utilisables en circulation extracorporelle. Il s'agit de cinq substances plastiques, six enduits siliconés, sept types d'aciers inoxydables. L'action de la rugosité des surfaces de quelques aciers est également examinée. Les facteurs sanguins suivants ont été dosés: les thrombocytes, les leucocytes, la prothrombine, le, fibrinogène, l'hémolyse, le taux des protéines adhérant aux surfaces des substances et le potassium plasmatique. L'effet des matériaux après six heures de contact est résumé dans les tableaux IV, V et VI. Parmi les substances plastiques examinées systématiquement jusqu'à ce jour l'Hostalen est la moins traumatisante. Parmi les enduits siliconés: le Désicote. La composition chimique des aciers inoxydables n'a pas une influence nette. En revanche la rugosité des surfaces lèse sélectivement les thrombocytes et les leucocytes.ZusammenfassungDie vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der traumatischen Wirkung gewisserfür den extrakorporellen Kreislauf in Frage kommenden Substanzen — auf das Blut. Es handelt sich um fünf plastische Stoffe, sechs überzüge aus Silikon und sieben nicht oxydierbare Stahlarten. Der Eintluß der Rauheit der Oberflache einiger Stahlsorten wird ebenfalls untersucht. Es wurden folgende Blutwerte bestimmt: Thrombozyten, Leukozyten, Prothrombin, Fibrinogen, Hämolyse, das plasmatische Kalium und die Menge Protein, die der Oberfläche der getesteten Materialien anhaftet. Die Wirkung der Substanzen nach sechsstündigem Kontakt wird in den Tabellen IV, V und VI gezeigt. Von den bis heute systematisch untersuchten plastischen Substanzen ist das Hostalen am wenigsten traumatisierend, von den überzügen aus Silikon das Desicote. Die chemische Zusammensetzung der nicht oxydierbaren Stahlarten hat keinen signikanten Einfluß. Dagegen verletzt die Raubeit der Oberfläche
