AbstractThis paper considers how far some of the principles used for producing effective written text can be applied to the production of instructional audiotapes. Transcripts of four original audiotapes were revised by adding summaries and headings, simplifying the text, re‐arranging parts of the text and numbering items of information. The transcripts were then re‐recorded. Each of 24 students listened to two tapes (one original and one revised) in a counterbalanced design. In a test of their recall of the content, students listening to thefirstof their two tapes recalled slightly (but not significantly) more from the revised versions. Students listening to the second of their tapes recalled significantly more when it was presented in the revised form. AbstractInstructional systems designers and developers have assumed idealized models and theories about the selection and use of materials for instruction. Such models and theories are based on what teachers should do instead of recognizing what teachers are doing when they select materials for instructions. This study examined how teachers select instructional materials for instruction. When making decisions for selecting and using materials teachers were influenced by the content of lessons taught, and by their professional training, rather than by the stating of behavioural objectives. An integrated instructional design should include a consideration of the mental and intuitive efforts of teachers, and of the qualities of materialsduringnotafterthe need assessment.

AbstractThis article describes computer conferencing in its educational context, particularly as a tool for encouraging greater autonomy in the learner. Conferencing experiments at the Open University with a large undergraduate course (1000–2000 students) are described, and guidelines proposed: the conferencing system must be integral to the course and related directly to an assessment, the facility must be easy to use and the conference moderator needs special skills to manage the conference. Various problems can arise, such as the non‐participant ‘lurker’ and the dominant personality. Ways in which conferencing can improve educational interaction are suggested. With an innovation as untested as conferencing, it is premature to expect definitive answers; rather this paper poses questions and identifies issues about the role of conferencing in education in the

AbstractSelected physics and geography classes in Guyanan secondary schools received four different instructional treatments. Three experimental groups received (A) a systematically designed curriculum unit implemented by the designer of the unit (B) the same unit implemented by another teacher and (C) a lesson utilising the aims and objectives defined in the curriculum unit. A fourth (control) group received the conventional lesson for this aspect of the curriculum. Pre‐ and post‐test data revealed significant learning gains in experimental groups. AbstractA sample of primary and secondary school students in Western Australia responded to a 20‐item questionnaire designed to measure attitudes towards microcomputers. Favourable attitudes were found, with no noticeable gender differences. Attitudes of younger students were slightly more positive than those of older students. The attitudes of students having a computer at home were more positive than those of students without a home computer.
