AbstractThe prominence of the personality trait of Negative Affectivity (NA) in the stress literature has increased over the last decade. Negative affectivity has been widely reported both to have direct effects on measures of strain, and to act as a potential confounding variable of stressor–strain relations in self‐report research (Watson and Clark, 1984). However, more recent work has demonstrated that NA can also moderate environment–outcome relationships, acting as a vulnerability factor in the stress model, or alternatively that its influence may be mediated through perceptions of the work environment. In the present study, these four possible pathways through which NA may be implicated in job satisfaction and symptom report were examined.In terms of symptom report, NA was found to have direct effects, to act as a partial confound, and to play a significant moderating (vulnerability) role. In contrast, for the prediction of job satisfaction, the influence of NA was found to be mediated through perceptions of the work environment. AbstractIn general, previous research suggests that the primary determinant of union members' level of union commitment is their satisfaction with the union's ability to secure desired levels of various work‐related outcomes (wages, benefits etc.). This research is consistent with a social exchange based view of union commitment. Eisenbergeret al.(1986, 1990) obtained support for the idea that social exchange is not entirely economic: perceptions of organizational support predicted several criteria. This study sought to extend organizational support perceptions to the union setting and test the relative contribution of members' perceptions of union support and instrumentality to prediction of union commitment. Hypotheses were tested by surveying 77 employees of a small northeastern state university. Results of correlational and multiple regression analyses indicated that perceptions of union support accounted for more variance in union commitment than did union instrumentality. This result held for the union's instrumentality relative to both traditional bargaining issues and issues important only to faculty members. However, contrary to predictions, exchange ideology did not moderate relations between union instrumentality and union commitment or between union support and union commitmen

AbstractThis study compares employees' descriptions of their jobs with their subsequent descriptions of the same jobs after they have been retired for some time; it also compares employees' descriptions of their expected retirement lives with their descriptions of their lives after they have actually retired. This will aid in the interpretation of past (and future) research about retirement that collects data only from older employees before they retire or only from retirees after they have retired, but not from people at both times of their lives. Retirees' retrospective reports of job descriptions agreed strongly with their prior reports, and employees' prospective reports of their retirement activities agreed moderately well with their subsequent reports.

Using a sample of 283 recent business college graduates, the paper examines the consequences of underemployment on individuals' attitudes towards their jobs, their careers, and their lives in general.
