SummaryWe have discussed our experiences with 11 patients who had colorectal disorders and hematologic diseases. Most (9 of 11) had anorectal problems which fell into the categories of local infection, sepsis, and bleeding. Six of the nine patients with anorectal disorders had had anorectal disease previously, before recognition of their hematologic disease. Methods of treatment and general care of patients with concurrent proctologic and hematologic disorders are discussed. Chemotherapy, platelet transfusions, and other supportive measures are used in the effective treatment of the anorectal disorders.

SummaryForty cases of amebic granuloma of the cecum, taken from 1,225 cases of intestinal amebiasis, and 20 cases of adenocarcinoma of the cecum, taken from 10,000 general case histories, are reviewed. Special attention is given to the clinical picture, particularly the similarities between the symptoms of the two types of disorders. The relationship between amebic granuloma and adenocarcinoma of the cecum, and the likelihood that granuloma may be precancerous, especially in improperly treated cases, are emphasized. Treatment of all cases of granuloma must be adequate, and strict control must be exercised until the lesion has regressed completely. This is a preliminary study, made to call attention to the fact that amebic granulomas of the cecum may be precancerous. Further analysis of the topic will be made, and may clarify the issue and support our hypothesis.

SummaryIndolent perineal wounds in 20 patients treated with Sulfamylon. Six (35.3 per cent) patients' wounds healed completely and seven (41.2 per cent) had good results. This preliminary report indicates that further trials with Sulfamylon for the treatment of indolent wounds are indicated.

SummaryRecent advances in our understanding of the pathogenesis of diverticular disease of the colon demand a more critical approach to the pathologic, radiologic and clinical distinction between diverticulosis and diverticulitis. In evaluating the rationale and efficacy of newer surgical procedures, full cognizance should be taken of these developments. It is hoped that this will result in a refinement of our indications for surgical operation and provide a solution in our continual quest to apply the right operation to the right patient.

SummaryA case of ischemic colitis proximal to an obstructing carcinoma of the colon is presented. The first description of the blood vessels in such cases is included. The necessity for preoperative or operative diagnosis is stressed. Significant mortality and morbidity from suture‐line disruption occur in the absence of proper diagnosis. Frozen section of the proximal margin of resection is recommended to determine whether further proximal resection should be done. Particular emphasis is placed on evaluation of the blood vessels in the submucosa.
