Summary and ConclusionsThe pertinent data in 12 cases of lipoma of the colon have been presented. Next to adenomatous polyps, lipomas are the most common benign tumors of the colon. The symptoms are inconspicuous until the occurrence of complications, such as ulceration, bleeding, intussusception or obstruction. Submucosal lipomas of the rectum or lower sigmoid present a distinctive proctoscopic appearance, and usually can be removed proctoscopically. Above the proctoscopic level, roentgenologic examination is successful in demonstrating the presence of most lipomas. The radiolucent shadow of a submucosal lipoma is smoothly out‐lined, sharply defined, occasionally pedunculated and often distinctive enough to suggest a diagnosis of lipoma. Surgical removal is the only satisfactory treatment.

SummaryComplications of cardiac arrest and of arterial and venous thrombo‐embolic disease have been discussed from the viewpoints of etiology, diagnosis, prevention and therapy.Management of acute arterial and venous trauma occurring during colon surgical procedures has been outlined.Briefly a colonic complication of translumbar aortography and the management of atherosclerotic aneurysm of the abdominal aorta have been discussed.

SummaryThe various surgical and physiologic problems associated with anal ileostomy after performance of total proctocolectomy are discussed. An opinion is given as to the value of this procedure. It is judged that anal ileostomy can be performed only when “colonization” of the terminal part of the ileum has taken place after performance of abdominal ileostomy.The immediate and late results obtained for five patients thus operated upon are presented.

ConclusionsWhen applied to anorectal wounds, 9‐alpha‐fluorohydrocortisone in 0.1 per cent and 0.2 per cent concentration and triamcinolone acetonide in 0.1 per cent concentration effectively minimizes edema, fibrosis, tab formation and postoperative pain. Smoother healing and reduced disability are accomplished in a higher percentage of cases with 0.2 per cent 9‐alpha‐fluorohydrocortisone than with preparations containing 0.1 per cent of the corticosteroid. Benefits achieved with 0.1 per cent triamcinolone acetonide or 0.2 per cent 9‐alpha‐fluorohydrocortisone are roughly equivalent to those observed with 2.5 per cent hydrocortisone.Addition of antibacterial and antifungal agents to corticosteroids is considered helpful but not essential to treatment. When neomycin, gramicidin and nystatin were combined with triamcinolone acetonide, no clear‐cut advantage was apparent, and an undesirable amount of granulation tissue sometimes developed during the reparative process.Prompt topical application of corticosteroids in the postoperative period is a rational therapeutic measure which minimizes edema of perianal tissues, reduces pain and prevents other undesirable sequelae.
