Using ether solutions of cholesterol, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids and triglycerides in place of tissue thromboplastin, the clotting times of plasmas from patients with diabetes mellitus, angina pectoris and myocardial infraction were compared to those of plasmas from control subjects without metabolic or Cardiovascular disease. Although all lipids ultimately are thrombogenic, control and patient plasmas respond in a dissimilar fashion to these substances. In the patients with myocardial infarction, cholesterol caused significant acceleration of clot formation. The present hypothesis proposes that, in certain patients so disposed, ingested exogenous rather than endogenous lipids in the form of, particularly but not exclusively, cholesterol continually stimulate the formation of intravascular thrombi which eventually cause complete coronary occlusion. This approach is in keeping with the dynamic concept of nodular atheroselerosis as fittingly descriptive of the hstopathogenesis of the histopathogenesis of myocardial infarction.

Acute renal failure developed in 5 patients following Orabilex administration AND IN one after Priodax. Antecedent pathology would not explain the renal failure. Time relationaships, including recovery from other diseases, indicated a direct cause and effect from the oral cholecystographic agents. Careful deductions about a bilateral nephrogram observed after Orabilex in a normal individual indicated that the initial toxicity is on the renal blood vessels. Before cholecystography or after recovery from renal failure, all patients had excellent renal function. This rare reaction probably occurs with the same frequency for all past and present oral choleeystographic substances, provided the intestinal absorption index is taken into account. Except for the nephrographic case, the common denominator was doubled, repeated and excessive dosage. The attempt to force gallbladder visualization in patients severely jaundiced from conjugated bilirubin was also a prominent factor. Still, double doses should be used with care in appropriate clinical problems (Salzman et al.14, Twiss and Gillette19), testinal absorption of the butyrlated compounds. In the overall view, these compounds are among the safest drugs available to the clinician today despite the Food and Drug Administration's withdrawal of Orabilex from the market.

From January, 1958, to July, 1961, 2,545 patients with upper respiratory illnesses were Portsmouth and acute and convalescent sera were obtained from 2,323. These were tested by complement fixation against the antigens of influenza, adenovirus, psittacosislymhogranuloma venereum, andRickettsia burnett. Excluding a few cases infected with more than one virus, 230 were positive for influenza A, 63 for influenza B and 203 for adenovirus. One thousand seven hundred sixty-nine (76%) were negative.In a recruit population averaging about 670 during January, 1959, to July 1961, 1,87 boys reported with respiratory illnesses and paired sera were available from 1,608. Forty-four were positive for influenza A, 65 for influenza B, 105 for adenovirus and 48 for psittacosis-lymphogranuloma venereum; 1,288 (80%) were negative.During 1959 to 1961, 82 paired sera were tested from patients admitted to the hospital with nonbacterial pneumonia and 17 (21%) were positive; 6 influenza A, 2 influenza C, 3 adenovirus, 3 psittacosis-L.G.V., 2R. burnetiand 1 adenovirus and psittacosis-L.G.V.Five hundred twenty-eight paired sera were tested from patients with streptococcal pharyngitis. Twenty-eight (5%) were positive, with influenza A, B, C and adenovirus accounting for more than half of the positive reactions.

Forty-two cases treated by direct intravenous injection of FU are compared with 39 cases treated by three types of prolonged intravenous infusions. Less toxicity was produced in those cases in which the prolonged infusion technique was used. The therapeutic response in these cases treated by any of three types of prolonged infusion was as good as it was in these cases treated by any of three types of prolonged infusion was as good as it was in those treated by direct injection There was no loss of therapeutic effect, and no increased toxicity in those patients treated with one-half to one-hour infusion of FU in 250 ml of saline, as compared with those patients treated by longer infusions of FU in dextrose.

1. A random survey of 300 blood donors including Caucasians, Negroes and Puerto Ricans at the Kings County Hospital revealed a sickle-cell trait incidence of 4.7%. This means that a recipient at this hospital has almost a one in 20 chance of receiving sickle-trait blood.2. Thirteen patients received known sickle-cell trail blood during the period of study. No adverse effects were noted clinically.3. The safety of transfusing sicklecell erythrocytes into patients with various diseases is confirmed. The reasons for this safety are discussed.
