Renal function tests were performed on 20 presumptive heterozygotes for Wilson's disease (9 parents and 11 children of patients with Wilson's disease). Uric acid excretion and clearance was significantly increased and urinary acidifying and diluting capacities were significantly impaired in the heterozygotes in comparison with normal controls. In addition, two heterozygotes had hyperaminoaciduria and two others had increased urinary excretion of phosphorus. Other parameters of renal function tested, including glomerular filtration rate (CINand CCr), effective renal plasma flow(CPAH), functional tubular mass (TmPAH), calcium excretion and clearance, and urinary concentration capacity, all showed normal values.These abnormalities in renal tubular function show that heterozygotes for Wilson's disease have physiological alterations, a not unexpected finding since they were demonstrated previously to have an abnormal metabolism of copper.

Samples from a frozen plasma pool and frozen serum specimens from serum hepatitis studies conducted between 1951 and 1954 were tested for hepatitis-associated (Australia) antigen (HAA). The incubation period of clinical hepatitis and the time of appearance of HAA in recipients varied inversely with the dose of virus inoculated using a series of dilutions of the icterogenic pool of human plasma which contained HAA. By assuming an analogous relationship of incubation time of serum hepatitis and HAA to dose of virus inoculated, it was possible to estimate the relative infectious virus content of other materials used in the same studies, including treated fractions of the plasma pool, derivatives of the plasma pool, and serum from hepatitis carriers and an icterogenic lot of thrombin which were unrelated to the plasma pool.

Sixty-five skid-road and 47 middle- to upper-class alcoholics underwent hematologic and medical evaluation. Despite major differences in life style and nutrition between these two groups, there was no significant difference in extent of liver disease or anemia. Moreover, the extent of liver disease, anemia, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia in this community study of functioning alcoholics was significantly less than in a prior hospital study of acutely ill alcoholics. Iron deficiency was the commonest cause of anemia, probably because of frequent donations of plasma and blood by the skid-road alcoholics. Though megaloblastic anemia was infrequent, subnormal serum folate levels were commonly found in the skid-road group. In the middle- to upper-class group serum folate levels were normal in the absence of high blood ethanol levels. Ethanol causes depression of serum L. casel folate level, thus complicating assessment of folate balance in alcoholics.

Cephapirin, a new semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic for parenteral use was evaluatedin vitroand in patients with severe bacterial infections. Strains ofStaphylococcus aureus,Group A streptococci,Diplococcus pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae,pseudomonas, and salmonella were testedin vitroand were found to have the same degree of sensitivity to cephapirin as to cephalothin, with the exception of Group A streptococci and pneumococci which appeared more sensitive to cephapirin. Seven of 10 patients treated were cured clinically and bacteriologically, and in one instance the outcome was indeterminate. Side effects were minimal. One patient developed mild eosinophilia after high dose therapy for six weeks. There was little pain and no phlebitis at the injection or infusion sites. There was no evidence of renal toxicity even after prolonged therapy at high dosage. Serum and urine concentrations of cephapirin were similar to those achieved with equivalent doses of currently available parenteral cephalosporins.
