Carpet-wool blends are often very dirty and so need extra mechanical treatment to clean them, which may adversely affect their appearance and fibre length. A trial made to ascertain whether various degrees of opening have any effect on yarn properties is reported.

An account is given of the determination of yarn tensions developed during the tufting of loop-pile carpets. The measurement of yarn tensions and needle forces on a Venor sample-tufting machine yields approximations of the maximum yarn tensions likely to be developed. The work is extended to include measurements on commercial tufting machines.

A supporting paper to a draft British Standard for a method of test for the determination of the wettability of fabrics is presented. A comparison is made between the test conditions of the standard American method for the determination of wettability, those of the original British method, and those of a new British method, which forms the subject of the draft standard. The variables affecting the results given by the new British method are investigated, and the relevance of the test to practical applications is examined.
