摘要:
Price premiums and discounts paid for cotton quality attributes (trash, color, length, strength, and micronaire) by textile manufacturers were derived for three US cotton production regions. The data for the analysis were individual contracts of textile firm purchases representing about 26% of US cotton production and 41% of the cotton used by mills over the 1992–early 1995 period. All fiber attributes except strength significantly affected prices paid by mills for cotton from the Western, South Central, and Southern production regions. Price premiums and discounts for all fiber attributes differed between Western and South Central cottons. Region differences in price premiums and discounts between the West and South were found for length and micronaire, but little difference was found between the Southern and South Central regions for any fiber attribute except micronaire. The information obtained from the study provides better understanding of cotton pricing structures relative to quality attributes in the textile mill market.

摘要:
Graft copolymerizalion was performed on silk fibres by using methacrylamide (MAA), and changes in the mechanical properties and structure were investigated. Young's modulus of the MAA grafted silk fibre was analysed by applying the law of mixture by regarding the MAA grafted silk fibres as a composite comprising silk fibres and a MAA polymer resin. Young's modulus of the MAA polymer in the MAA grafted fibres was calculated to be approximately 4.6 GPa, which was larger than the value of a MAA polymer film. The MAA polymer in the MAA grafted silk fibres was oriented with respect to the fibre axis. When the volume fraction of the fibre in the MAA grafted silk fibres was more than 0.8, the tensile strength of the MAA grafted silk fibres agreed with the strength calculated by assuming that the failure of the MAA grafted silk fibres was caused by the failure of silk fibres and the MAA polymer was strained to the same extent as the silk fibres. The wide-angle X-ray diffraction measurements showed that crystallites in silk fibres treated with MAA to a large polymer add-on were destroyed by this treatment. The fracture of the MAA polymer matrixas well as the destruction of crystallites in silk fibres influenced the strength of the MAA grafted silk fibres when the volume fraction of the fibre was less than 0.8.

摘要:
Textile companies are striving for an advantage using many different competitive strategies and are often employing more than one strategy at a time. To maximize the potential of incorporating new technologies that include process equipment and information systems, an increased level of understanding of the integrated enterprise is required. This paper reviews the current research efforts relating to enterprise modeling in the textile industry. Discussed are two generic enterprise reference architectures: the Purdue Enterprise Reference Architecture and the Open Systems Architecture for CIM (CIMOSA). Areas for research in enterprise modeling in textiles are presented.

摘要:
An investigation of yarn breakage, related to thin places in the yarn, by using digital-signal processing on a personal computer is presented. By examining the stored measured results from an evenness tester and yarn-strength tester, an analysis of thin places and breakages at these points is made. Only yarn thin places in which the mass cross-section is less than −40% of the mean mass of the yarn cross-section per measured length (L= 180 m) are taken into consideration in the analysis. Through correlation analysis, a direct dependence of thin-place occurrence and yarn breakage at that point is established. It is found out that, in 61% of the samples tested, yarn breakage occurs at such a thin place. It is also confirmed that the mass of the yarn cross-section at the point of yarn breakage is proportional to the breaking force at the yarn section in question.

摘要:
This is the first of a two-part series describing the formulation of a computer-aided simulation of the ring-spinning process. The unique feature of this model is a formalized model of yarn breakage in the spinning process. This model takes into consideration specific features of the spinning process, the structure and properties of the control systems, and the dependence on the operator's behavior during changes in the production situation. The model is used to develop a computer-aided simulation and analysis routine connecting variables and parameters of the spinning process on the one hand and process production and yarn quality on the other hand. Part I presents the formalized description of the ring-spinning process as a basis for the creation of an interactive modeling system. The three basic levels of the model hierarchy are selected, and a plan of investigation is elaborated. The simulation software was developed by using SIMAN IV and Pascal. The simulation model presented describes the first of three hierarchy levels identified. Part II will present the simulation results.

摘要:
Bias-extension measurements of fabric deformation are compared with simple-shear measurements of the same deformation. Occasional significant differences between the results of the two tests correspond with the occurrence of sample buckling in the simple-shear test instrument (part of the KES-F system). This result contributes to the conclusion that the bias-extension test is the one more appropriate for industrial use.

摘要:
Two-dimensional-braid geometry is analyzed. The cover factor of a fabric braided on a particular braider depends on three variables: braid angle, helical length, and braid diameter; however, only two of the three are independent because of an equation of constraint. The cover factor of an existing braid is a function of braid angle and diameter and maintains a constant helical length between its tensile and compressive jammed states. A stable jammed state with maximum crimp is found to exist when the braid angle is 45° and the helical length is a minimum. When the braid diameter is held constant by braiding on a constant-diameter mandrel, the cover factor is increased by decreasing the helical length or increasing the braid angle. The cover factor is directly related to the fabric width as a single independent variable. When the yarn cannot be considered as a flat strip but must instead be considered to have a circular cross-section, the maximum cover factor in the jammed state is shown to be 0.82.

摘要:
This is the second part of a two-part series describing a computer-aided simulation of the ring-spinning process. Part II presents results of SYSTEM CONTROL, MACHINE, and WORKER sub-models using this simulation. In particular, Part II contains some recommendations about system-control installation and the influence of its parameters on the process production, yarn quality, and operator's utilization.
