摘要:
The rapid-felting properties of wool fibres with sinusoidal crimp form are extremely sensitive to temperature variations up to 40°C. At higher temperatures, increases in the rate of felting are generally small, and after long periods of felting a slight decrease in the rate may occur. Alternatively, for fibres whose rate of felting is seriously inhibited by their three-dimensional crimp form, there is a steady increase in the rate of felting over the entire range (20–80°C). Changes in frictional properties are shown to be not related to the felting results, which are largely attributed to parallel variations in the mechanical properties of the fibres.

摘要:
The limitations of sliver autolevellers are studied in terms of a linear model based on the perfect drafting of straight parallel fibres of equal length. The basic factors which limit their performance are the presence of ‘dead times’ in the control loops, and the impossibility of obtaining a direct measure of fibre-end density. This means that other related variables, such as thickness or drafting force, are used as approximations.

摘要:
The tested yields of 122 sale lots of greasy wool are compared with the buyers' and valuers' estimates of yield. Good agreement is shown between the average of buyers' yields, the average of tested yields, and the actual mill yield of top and noil. The average of valuers' estimates is biassed by a 1.3% overyield.

摘要:
An account is given of a microscopical study of the behaviour of water-soluble substances (salt arid sugar) on wool fibres when they are immersed in charged or batch dry-cleaning liquors. The effects observed depended on the water contents of liquor and fibre, but aqueous drops commonly grew around the dirt that dissolved in them; these then decreased in size and disappeared. Salt did not appear to build up in the charged liquor but was transferred from regions of the wool with a high salt content to regions containing less salt.
