For many years now we have been talking about the ‘IT revolution’. Companies, and indeed administrations, have been investing huge sums of money in the development of base technologies, product development and corporate information systems since the late 1970s/early 1980s, but it is only relatively recently that we have seen real benefits being secured from this investment. Why is this the case? What has happened to make the IT revolution a reality at last?

Much has been written recently about the merits of object-oriented programming, with enthusiasm among software developers apparently growing day by day. But what are the implications of this programming paradigm for those who are not professional software engineers? This article presents some of the basic ideas of object-oriented programming and reviews the state of the art in this rapidly expanding field.

This article describes techniques for applying formal mathematical methods to the specification and design of railway signalling and interlocking equipment which is implemented using microprocessors and real-time software. Our results have been obtained by combining the specification language higher-order logic (HOL) with the disciplined use of annotated subsets of the computer programming languages such as Ada. A global framework has been developed both for computer-aided design (CAD) tools for railway interlocking and for the future development of the operational software for practical signalling systems.

Australia is one of five net energy exporting countries in the OECD. It is able to earn billions of dollars annually from the sales of its energy resources. It has copious quantities of coal, natural gas and uranium, enough to last many years at current production rates. Only in oil is Australia not self sufficient and reliant on imports. The adoption of more fuel substitution measures could help to alleviate this shortfall.

Ferranti International's Network Information Management System (NIMS) provides computer-based monitoring and supervision applicable to utility networks in the electricity, oil, gas, water and chemical industries. NIMS provides dynamic viewing and control of networks from high powered, high resolution colour graphics workstations, communicating with dual redundant database servers. A case study of an electricity distribution application has demonstrated the enhanced facilities, greater safety, improved security, and reduction in operating costs, which this type of system can offer a utility network.

A brief overview of parallel programming languages developed in the former USSR is given. First some historical remarks and early results are described. Then application-oriented languages are presented and programming systems supporting the partnership of universalism and specialisation are considered.
