From 1972 to 1990, the number of Postdoctoral General Dentistry (PGD) programs increased by 57% and enrollment increased by 131% for a total of 118 PGD programs and 1,367 positions. Although there has been some increase in military and Veterans Affairs (VA) programs, the major increase was in civilian programs. From 1972–78, the major impetus for growth was hospital sponsorship of General Practice Residency (GPR) programs. With federal funding of PGD programs, civilian GPR programs continued to be the main source of growth until the accreditation of Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) programs in 1981. Subsequently, almost all increases were in AEGD programs. Over the 12‐year period of federal funding (1978–90), there was an increase of 406 civilian PGD positions to make a total of 925 positions. The increase in enrollment directly attributable to federal funding was 242.The “unmet demand” for PGD programs was estimated to be approximately 300 positions for 1990, from data derived from the Survey of Dental Seniors and the Matching Program. The oral pathosis caused by systemic disorders in middle‐aged and elderly adults has been the focus of many publications in recent years. The intraoral soft and hard tissue changes associated with systemic disorders, medications, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment have been well‐investigated and‐documented. Far less attention has been paid to the role of oral Infection as the etiology of systemic disorders. A literature review (1980–1994) is provided here focusing on well‐documented cases in which systemic disorders were caused by oral foci of infections. This paper attempts to raise the level of awareness of practitioners in considering possible systemic complications caused by oral infection. It also emphasizes the need for further longitudinal studies in this field involving healthy and medically compromised elderly in

Coping with patient deaths and family bereavement has received minimal attention in dental education and literature. This study was conducted to determine how frequently dentists experience patient deaths, how they cope with the knowledge of a patient's death, and if they demonstrate need for emphasis in the dental curricula in the areas of death and bereavement. A survey adapted from Chiodo and Tolle (1988) was sent to all 2091 dentists in the State of Kentucky. The response rate was 47.68% (997 returned surveys). Findings include: (1) General dentists (GDs) have a significantly higher number of patients who die each year than do specialists (S) (GD = 7, S = 1.5); (2) coping behaviors range from sending sympathy cards (63%) to attending the funeral (23%); (3) patient deaths cause stress, most stress occurring when patients die unexpectedly; (4) the greatest stress was encountered when talking with the patient's family; and (5) most dentists (58%) believed that bereavement education should occur in dental school. In conclusion, this research adds to the limited literature on appropriate coping behaviors by dentists when patients die and suggests that death and bereavement education should occur in the dental school setting to prepare practicing dentists for coping with patient loss due to death, and to provide family bereavement support mechanisms.

Older patients' nutritional status must be assessed for their morbidity and mortality to be decreased and their quality of life Improved. Food and fluid Intake is markedly Influenced by oral health status. In turn, oral health has an Interrelationship with general health. Because nutritional status and oral health exist in a symbiotic relationship, it is essential that the dental team Identify older patients who are nutritionally at risk. Screening for nutritional problems in elderly dental patients is made easier with screening Instruments developed by the Nutrition Screening Initiative (NSI). The NSI developed criteria to determine risk factors for poor nutritional status in older Americans. The DETERMINE Your Nutritional Health checklist, a 10‐Item screening Instrument, followed by the Levels I and II Nutrition Screens, can be used in the dental office to ascertain which elderly patients are most likely to be in danger of experiencing nutritional problems. The dental team can then perform Interventions and/or make appropriate referral

This paper is a review of the medical concerns pertinent to dental care and a preliminary study of dental findings of the sickle cell anemia (SS) patient. The dental characteristics observed in 21 dental patients with SS are described.
