摘要:
This paper reports the results of a national survey of 1,321 general practitioners regarding their level of awareness of and experiences with the treatment of older victims of abuse and neglect. Greater than 90% were aware of elder abuse and neglect as a social and medical problem. Greater than 10% had personal knowledge or had treated a victim of abuse or neglect. Data suggest that dentists will increasingly come in contact with victims and must be trained to recognize, treat, and report such incidents

摘要:
An intraoral tongue shield appliance for unconscious patients is described. This appliance has advantages over other such appliances in that it does not require impressions for its fabrication, can be made quickly, and placed and retained in a patient with a limited oral opening. Its use is demonstrated in a pharmacologically paralyzed and sedated patient with tongue trauma

摘要:
The relationship between self‐reported medication use (exposure to one or more drugs with anticipated gingival effect — antidepressants, diuretics, antihypertensives, hormones) and four measures of gingival conditions (plaque index, gingival index, calculus index, maximum CPITN score) was examined among 594 patients in 35 dental practices in two North Carolina counties. Patients with long‐term medication use were compared to patients without long‐term use on four measures of gingival condition. When controlling for sex and age within age group, medication use was a significant predictor (P<0.05) for elevated gingival and plaque index scores among the white less than 65 group. For the white 65+ group (n = 90), medication use was not a significant predictor for any ind

摘要:
The institutionalized elderly use more drugs per capita than do other segments of the population and are more likely than other population groups to have adverse drug reactions. Many of these drugs could affect oral health or dental treatment. This paper provides data on the frequency with which a population of nursing home residents took medications with possible oral effects. Information regarding prescription and nonprescription drug use was obtained from nursing home records of 481 subjects. Nine medication effect categories of possible significance in dentistry were established. Dentists treating institutionalized patients must be knowledgeable about patient drug use because 94% of this institutionalized population were taking medications that could alter oral health or dental treatment

摘要:
This paper reports on the comparison of 104 patient‐provided medical histories and those provided by the patients' physicians. Patient‐provided histories were obtained using a written health questionnaire with verbal follow‐up. At the level of specific medical conditions, patients and physicians agreed only about half of the time, whereas there was better agreement by systemic disease category (average agreement 77%). Both patients and physicians reported systemic conditions not reported by the other, indicating that neither patients nor physicians can be relied on as the sole source of medical history information. Whenever there is a complex medical history or uncertainty about the completeness of the patient's knowledge and reporting of their medical history, contacts with the patient's physician(s) are ind
