摘要:
The sesquiterpene lactone 8a-angeloyloxy-1Of3-hydroxy- 6α,7αH-guaian-3-en-6,12-olide was isolated fromLaserpitium latifoliumL. (Apiaceae) of Serbian origin. This lactone has not been detected in the same species of Czechoslovak origin, a factor that may be important taxonomically. When subjected to pyrolysis, the lactone lost a molecule of water, producing a new sesquiterpene lactone 8α-angeloyloxy-6αH,7αH-guaian-3,10-diene-6,12-olide. The structures of the sesquiterpene lactones were determined.

摘要:
The essential oils of a number ofPelargoniumspecies, hybrids and cultivars in the family Geraniaceae were screened for agrochemical and pharmacological properties using 25 gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms,Aspergillus niger, and isolated guinea pig ileum. Substantial agrochemical potential was observed in most hexane extracts, including those from ivy-leaf, zonals, and regals as well as scented leaf species and cultivars. The extracts were analyzed using GC/MS and compounds correlated with the agrochemical and pharmacological activity. No correlation between the agrochemical and pharmacological action and the essential oil composition was noted. The active component could be non-terpenoid. The active principle which caused relaxation in smooth muscle could be developed into an anti-asthmatic or antispasmodic therapeutic.

摘要:
Root bark ofNauclea latifoliadefatted with diethylether and then extracted with ethanol had an LD50of 300 mg/kg in mice (i.p.) at 24 h. No significant effect of the extract on pentobarbitone-induced hypnosis in mice after i.p. injection was observed and challenged mice showed nervous signs prior to death. An oral administration of the ethanolic extract (100 mg/kg) significantly reduced pentobarbitone-induced sleep in rats poisoned with CCl4. The elevation of serum glutamic-oxalocetic trasaminase (SGOT), glutamic- pyruvic transaminne (SGPT), and alkaline phosphatase (SALP) induced by CCl4intoxication in rats was also significantly attenuated by the extract. The ethanolic extract, at a dose of 1 mg/ml, remarkably reduced the leakage of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in isolated rat hepatocytes and exhibited a significant action on lipid peroxidation. Other fractions attenuated the leakage of LDH, but had no significant effect on lipid peroxidation. The ethanolic extract appeared to decrease the level of parasitaemia in a dose dependent manner in mice experimentally infected withTrypanosonla brucei brucei.

摘要:
Studies were conducted on the pharmacological effects ofRhaptopetalum coriaceumin mice and rats. Oral doses of a methanolic extract produced a purgative effect in mice. The extract also produced contractions of the guinea pig ileum, an action that was partially blocked by atropine and hexamethonium. In vivo tests performed with the extract showed profuse vaginal bleeding in pregnant rats and rats in the highest treatment group (1000 mgfkg) aborted fetuses.

摘要:
Maytenus aquifoliumMart., popularly known as Espinheira santa, is a native Brazilian tree from which the leaves are extensively used to prepare antiulcerogenic infusions. To determine the effect of fertilization on morphologic characteristics and secondary metabolites, 2 year old plants were transplanted to a prefertilized field and submitted to treatment with organic and inorganic fertilizers. Fields pretreated with fertilizer significantly increased plant height, stem diameter, and the number of leaves and branches, but the levels of triterpenes and total phenols were not affected.

摘要:
A newly-described tropical forest species,Ancistrocladus korupensis, produces an alkaloid, michellamine B, with activity against the human immunodeficiency virus. To reduce leaf-harvest pressure on scarce naturally-occurring plants, efforts are being made to bring the plant into cultivation in or near its native environment. Mycorrhizal colonization ofAncistrocladus korupensis, which may be important for successful cultivation of the plant and production of michellamine B, had not been previously studied. Roots from naturally-occurring plants were examined and observed to be well-colonized by vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae.

摘要:
Red pepper,Capsicumspp., has a long history of cultivation on earth. Consumed by the Indians of South and Central America as early as 7000 B.C., the plant was grown in cultivated fields some 2000 years later. Following the initial visits of the Spanish to the Americas, the plant was brought to Europe and from there to most tropical, subtropical, and temperate zones. By volume, red pepper products, pungent and non-pungent, represent some of the most important spice commodities in the world. TheCapsicumfruit are an excellent source of natural, micronutrient antioxidants (vitamins C and E and carotenoids) which appear to be critically important in preventing or reducing chronic and age-related diseases. Fruit from the pungent hot type pepper plant are historically employed in traditional medicine and are currently being used in modern herbology and conventional medicines. Capsaicin, the predominant compound in pungent types ofCapsicum, induces depletion of substance P and other neuropeptides from sensory nerve terminals. A capsaicin cream has been introduced into dermatologic therapy and proven useful in preventing chronic pain associated with post-herpetic neuralgia, diabetic neuropathy, and other pain syndromes.
