摘要:
ABSTRACT.Epileptic syndromes represent a new way of looking at epileptological diagnostic entities. These syndromes transcend the realm of seizure types and constitute special clinical conditions which depend largely on age and genetic predisposition (notwithstanding the frequent occurrence of associated structural lesions). Epileptic syndromes without structural pathology tend to be benign: primary generalized epilepsy, benign rolandic epilepsy, benign occipital lobe epilepsy, and others. West syndrome and especially the Lennox-Gastaut syndrome exemplify severe forms of epileptic seizure disorder.Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of epileptic syndromes depend heavily on the correct interpretation of the EEG findings. Thus, this modern segment of epileptology is not thinkable without solid EEG diagnosis. The differentiation of these syndromes is highly pragmatic (and by no means merely academic): these differentiations result in much better understanding of benign and severe seizure disorders and permit a more precise prognostication. It is important to understand the limits of epileptic syndromes (and the domain of nonsyndromic epilepsies).

摘要:
ABSTRACT.The classical clinical triad of West syndrome consists of the seizure type infantile spasms, the EEG pattern hypsarrhythmia, and mental retardation. However, when patients are evaluated by time-locked video-EEG and details of the seizure types and EEG patterns are correlated with clinical, radiological, and pathological data it becomes apparent that there are several subtypes of West syndrome. These subtypes have different clinical manifestations, etiologies, and prognoses.

摘要:
ABSTRACT.The heart is a relatively simple mechanical device whose primary purpose is to circulate oxygenated and non-oxygenated blood throughout the body. Its rhythmical repetitive pumping action is initiated and maintained by a series of electrical events that can be recorded as the electrocardiogram (ECG). EEG technologists who routinely monitor this electrical event have the opportunity to watch this over a much longer period of time than the ECG technician recording a routine ECG for only a few minutes. Even though the simplified“Lead I”that is usually recorded is only a piece of the story, a great deal can be learned if a few measurements are made and the individual components are analyzed.

摘要:
ABSTRACT.Patients with prolongation of the Q-T interval of the electrocardiogram are at risk for ventricular tachyarrhythmias which can lead to severe neurologic morbidity and mortality secondary to cerebral ischemia. Since these patients may present with seizures or syncope, they frequently receive their first diagnostic evaluation through the EEG laboratory. Electrocardiographic monitoring during an EEG examination is a simple and common practice but analysis for possible prolongation of the Q-T interval is not routinely performed. This paper discusses the importance and methodology of measuring the electrocardiogram Q-T interval on records obtained in the EEG laboratory.

摘要:
ABSTRACT.In some respects the EEG of sleep and coma may be comparable and the purpose of monitoring a sleeping subject and a comatose patient by spectral array are similar–reduction of data, observance of slow EEG changes with time at a glance, and detection of features in the EEG of sleep and coma without reference to the concept of sleep stages. This is especially appropriate when sleep scoring landmarks and phasic events such as rapid eye movements, sleep spindles, or K-complexes are not well defined or absent. Discussed in this paper are the technique and validation of recording with density spectral array in sleep and coma. Results from a validation study of density spectral array compared to simultaneous polygraph sleep recordings in ten normal subjects are presented and used as a control and comparison for the density spectral array recordings of comatose patients.
