ABSTRACT:The effects of drugs on the EEG have been of interest since Berger demonstrated in 1929 that electrical signals could be recorded from the scalp. Berger described changes in the EEG following a variety of medications and, based on these observations, hypothesized that there was a relationship between changes in alpha activity and mental processes. A large number of drugs have now been demonstrated to alter the EEG and many of these drug-induced changes may be clinically useful. Understanding the effects and significance of drug effects on the EEG requires an understanding of the physiological basis of electroencephalography. This paper reviews the physiological basis of the EEG and the effects of commonly used drugs on background rhythms and epileptiform activity. The effects of prenatal and postnatal drug exposure on the neonatal EEG are also reviewed.

ABSTRACT:We report a case of complex partial status epilepticus associated with the EEG evolution of bilateral periodic lateralized epileptiform discharges (BiPLEDs). Complex partial status was symptomatic of continuous ictal discharges from a chronic focus associated with possible facilitation of a latent second focus. We believe that this intraictal activation, followed by independent cycling of both foci, resulted in prolonged clouding of consciousness and reversible BiPLEDs on electroencephalography.

ABSTRACT.Nerve conduction studies are utilized to evaluate damage sustained by the peripheral nervous system. There are numerous technical considerations that must be addressed properly for the physician to diagnose correctly where and how severe the damage is, what method of treatment is called for, and the predicted clinical outcome. This paper will address what a nerve conduction study does, generally how to perform one, common difficulties encountered, general guidelines for setting up a laboratory, and a short reading list.

ABSTRACT.To clarify the correlation between P300 latency and intelligence capacity, we used two auditory discrimination paradigms (the button-pressing task and the counting task) to elicit event-related potentials (ERPs) in 50 healthy Japanese children from 5 to 16 years of age. We presented the stimuli, a series of binaural 1- and 2-kHz pure tone bursts, in random sequence. In order to evaluate our subjects' intelligence, we performed the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children–Revised (WISC–R) in a one-to-one manner.There was a linear regression on two tasks between P300 latencies and the WISC–R score (T-score for full-scale intelligence quotient [FSIQ], verbal IQ [VIQ], and performance IQ [PIQ]). Those correlation levels were r =−0.608 (p<0.001) for FSIQ, r =−0.658 (p<0.001) for VIQ, and r =−0.502 (p<0.001) for PIQ on the button-pressing task. On this task all of the subtests (raw scores) had significant negative correlations with P300 latency. On the counting task, however, all five verbal subtests plus picture completion and block design had significant negative correlations with P300 latency. Both tasks showed highly negative correlations between P300 latencies and VIQ or verbal subtests.From these findings, we presume that evaluating P300 latency might be beneficial in determining the intelligence capacities of children.
