ABSTRACT.PLEDs constitute a distinctive but uncommon EEG phenomenon of repetitive, roughly periodic, and stereotyped lateralized complexes. Most often they have a widespread hemispheric distribution with regional predominance. Within a given record, localization of complexes is more constant than morphology which consists of polyspikes, bi- or triphasic waves, spike and wave, sharp waves, or polyphasic waves. Complexes are usually of medium voltage and are associated with suppression of normal rhythms in the same region.PLEDs are usually transient and have a close temporal relationship with acute or progressive structural lesions, most commonly stroke. Rarely PLEDs remain for years without evidence of a progressive structural lesion. There is a strong association with cerebral seizures. The latter are usually focal, sometimes showing secondary generalization; some patients have epilepsia partialis continua. Significant systemic metabolic disorders occur in about 1/4 to 1/3 of patients. PLEDs are associated with a high mortality and morbidity, with the latter including recurrent epileptic seizures.

ABSTRACT.In an effort to obtain a satisfactory pattern-reversal visual evoked potential (PVEP) with only a few repetitions, the standard analog bandpass of 5–100 Hz of the PVEP was reduced to 1–25 Hz using digital filters. Latencies of the response were unchanged compared with those with a bandpass of 5–100 Hz. This filtering eliminates the high frequency noise together with high frequencies, if any, contained in the response, thus improving the signal-to-noise ratio. Digital filtering makes it possible to obtain a satisfactory average with fewer responses without changing the latencies. The power spectrum of the average VEP with bandpass of 5–100 Hz of a selection of patients and of normal subjects showed only negligible percentage of activity above 20 Hz. Examples of averages with bandpass of 5–100 Hz and 1–25 Hz as well as of their power spectrum are given. Digital filtering produces satisfactory PVEP averages with lower number of responses than that usually recommended. This is an advantage when dealing with patients with short attention span.

ABSTRACT.Mental activation is a simple test consisting of two standardized questions and two commands. This test is given in order to raise the level of vigilance and to differentiate physiological drowsiness from states of mild to moderate impairment of consciousness (obtundation, morbid lethargy). In addition to the induced EEG changes, the patient's mental (behavioral) response is also observed.

ABSTRACT.Theophylline is an older drug that has undergone a recent transformation in usage. Long recognized as a potent bronchodilator for relief of acute asthmatic symptoms, recent definition of the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic characteristics of this drug has increased its effectiveness as an anti-asthmatic agent while decreasing the risk of toxicity. Tea leaves are the source from which theophylline is extracted.
