SummaryThe present series of single case studies was designed to evaluate the comparative efficacy of masseter EMG feedback with progressive relaxation training in the treatment of TMJ dysfunction. Study 1 employed a multiple baseline design across the symptoms of jaw pain, jaw tension and shoulder pain in a patient with chronic TMJ problems. The results indicated that relaxation training was the treatment responsible for improvements in subjective ratings of jaw pain and tension, whereas masseter EMG feedback provided little additional benefit. Trapezius EMG feedback was necessary to provide improvements in ratings of shoulder pain. Study 2 consisted of four single case designs in which masseter EMG feedback and relaxation training were compared with four TMJ patients. Results indicated that relaxation produced clear improvements in pain and tension ratings for two patients, a combination of EMG feedback and relaxation training resulted in slight improvements in one patient, and neither treatment procedure was effective for the final patient. SummaryTwo hundred and seventy‐eight restoration examinations were made of Concise and Nuva‐fil resins used to restore fractured incisors, over periods of up to 5 years. Following the placement of wide bevels along the fracture margins, retention was achieved by using acid‐etching with bonding resins and by pins in some instances. SummaryIn the experiments reported here the influence of eye closure upon the muscle tone in the region of the anterior temporal muscles was studied during mandibular rest in four patients with TMJ dysfunction and in four healthy subjects. The muscle activity as well as the cortical activity (EEG) of the patients was influenced by changes in visual stimulation. EMG (the anterior temporal region) and EEG (parieto‐occipital region) were recorded with needle electrodes. Ongoing EMG activity was present in all patients when their eyes were open. Closure of both eyes reduced the muscle activity by 50–100%. Closure of one eye could also abolish all activity but the degree of this influence was variable. Opening of the eyes blocked the alpha rhythm in the EEG. Simultaneously, increased activity was observed in the region of the temporal muscle. The activity level in the temporal region of the healthy subjects was very low and could easily be reduced to noise level using ordinary relaxation manoeuvres without eye closure.The results reported here indicate that visual stimulation may increase muscle tone in the temporal region probably as part of an arousal reaction. SummaryThis paper discusses some of the problems and techniques that are involved in the prosthetic management of patients who are to undergo surgery to the upper and lower jaws. It stresses the importance of a close relationship between the surgeon and the prosthodontist so that the necessary treatment plan may be prescribed pre‐operatively rather than post‐operatively. SummaryIn the interests of producing an improved periodontal dressing material, adhesive cements are under consideration. A new glass ionomer system—aluminoborates—shows some potential in this respect, and a relatively soluble formulation was chosen for a simple biological test in rats, by means of implantation in polypropylene tubes. As a positive control, the widely used aluminosilicate cement Aspa® was employed, and empty tubes were used as negative controls. SummaryWith cineradiographic technique an assessment was made of the denture mobility of conventional and pelotte dentures in the upper jaw and of the position of the bolus during chewing of meat and bread. Five randomly selected edentulous patients with moderate alveolar ridge resorption rehabilitated with dentures of conventional design, and another five with dentures furnished with subnasal retentive pelottes, were incorporated in the study. Cineradiographic registrations were made in lateral and frontal projections with a picture frame speed of 38/s.Analysis of the cineradiographic films revealed only small differences for the denture mobility for the two patient groups. This indicated in the patients with severe ridge resorption, an obvious reduction of denture displacement through the use of the nasal pelotte or prong. The displacement was of similar magnitude as for those dentures where an alveolar ridge creates effective retention and limitation of horizontal movements. The analyses of the bolus position during chewing gave the information that in all individuals wearing pelotte dentures, the bolus was positioned more distally, than for patients with conventional dentures. Presumably this was in order to reduce discomfort in the frontal region, i.e. the region of the pelottes. Patients with conventional dentures showed a more even distribution of the bolus to all regions.
