摘要:
summaryThe design and application of spring cantilever and direct cantilever bridgework is evaluated in relation to developments in new materials and the significance of the health of the periodontal tissues. Cantilever bridgework is not advanced as a preferred alternative to conventional fixed bridgework but as a means of meeting certain clinical situations which preclude the use of abutment supports at both ends of a bridge. Lack of success in cantilever bridgework can frequently be attributed to the abuse of design rather than failure of the underlying cantilever principle.

摘要:
summaryA theoretical analysis of the force actions at the temporomandibular joint is presented. The equations of equilibrium of the mandible under a static load are derived and the solutions yielding the minimum joint force are explored. Using integrated electromyography, an estimate is presented of the forces at the joint with the mandible supporting a static load on the incisor and canine teeth. The conclusion reached is that the joint is load bearing during function.

摘要:
summaryDetails of an X‐ray diffraction study on six dental modelling waxes and on known constituents of modelling waxes are described. The results of thermal expansion, thermal analysis and flow characteristics tests on the materials are given. Application of the knowledge obtained from the investigation is suggested in the formulation of a modelling wax consisting of a binary mixture of paraffin wax and microcrystalline wa

摘要:
summaryA brief history and the aims of treatment of amelogenesis imperfecta and dentinogenesis imperfecta are described. In a description of a system of management of these conditions the advantages and possibilities of early treatment is stressed. Conserving the primary dentition makes the restoration of the permanent teeth easier because the correct jaw relationships are maintained. Long‐term observation of the developing dentition allows problems to be overcome or intercepted at the most propitious time. Semi‐permanent restorations for the newly erupted permanent teeth and the rationale for their use are described. An approach to providing adolescents with crowns for all their teeth, restoring groups of teeth, is described and the problems of partially erupted teeth are discussed. Some possibilities of simplifying and improving the types of restoration available, such as the use of composite materials as facings, are described. The special needs of young patients and the problems associated with treating them are indicated through

摘要:
summaryTransverse segments 3–4 cm long were excised post mortem from the radius and from the edentulous mandible in twenty‐four females and twenty‐six males, aged 46–92 years. In order to obtain a value for the density of the minerals in the two different bones, the specific gravities of the specimens were determined by application of Archimedes' principle. Intra‐individually, the specific gravity was found to vary inversely with age (P<0.01). A statistical correlation was also found in this respect between the mandible and the radius in the material as a whole

摘要:
summaryTransverse sections, 3–4 cm long, were obtained post mortem from the radii and from edentulous mandibles of fifty patients (twenty‐four females and twenty‐six males) aged 46–92 years. The mineral density of the sections was measured by roentgen absorption. A significant negative correlation was found between the mineral density and age (P<0.01). A statistically significant correlation was found between the variation of the mineral density of the mandible and that of the radius (

摘要:
summaryAn experimental study is described of the apex formation and structure in immature permanent teeth after vital amputation, vital extirpation and after the treatment of teeth with necrotic pulp. Experiments in young dogs suggest that after vital amputation of the coronal part of the pulp, root formation was continued through the process of changed odontogenesis. In cases where the pulp had been completely extirpated or after the treatment of pulpless teeth, the process of normal odontogenesis was interrupted and the apex was completely closed by non‐homogeneous vital calcified tissue. On the basis of studies of the structure of this calcified tissue, it was concluded that it was a product of the formative activity of cells originating from the successive differentiation of fibroblasts in the young granulation tissue. The experiments suggest that following vital amputation of the pulp in children, further root odontogenesis is possible. In the treatment of pulpless teeth, the basic target should be stimulation and preservation of the formative activity of the granulation tissue cells in the apical part of the root canal to allow the possibility of calcified callus forming in the wide apical openin

摘要:
summaryIn this study the damping of ultrasonic waves as well as the compressive strength of amalgam has been measured as a function of the time delay between trituration and condensation. The damping of the ultrasound energy is proportional to the macroporosity, which is caused by lack of plasticity and difficulties encountered in combining various amalgam portions. Also, damping is increased with the condensation delay. Nearly all brands investigated showed a decrease in strength and an increasing macroporosity with delay in condensation. The results indicate that the macroporosity caused by condensation delay determines primarily the mechanical properties of the amalgam restoration.
