摘要:
AbstractResearch literature in the field of extramarital sex (EMS) is reviewed. Initially, definitional problems which reveal the need for increased rigor in specifying the sexual behavior under consideration, the dyad or group outside of which the behavior occurs, and the consensual or non‐consensual nature of the behavior are discussed. Twelve surveys of EMS are examined and the limitations of incidence rate figures discussed. Empirical studies have attempted to identify key variables which discriminate between EMS and non‐EMS samples. The findings of this research are summarized according to four variable categories: social background characteristics, characteristics of the marriage, personal readiness characteristics, and sex and gender differences. Characteristics of the marriage and personal readiness characteristics are found to be of prime importance in understanding EMS, although sex and gender differences frequently qualify major empirical relationships. The attitude continuum of extramarital sexual permissiveness (EMSP) has received considerable research attention. Although premarital sexual permissiveness is the most significant correlate of EMSP, the tenuous results of research examining the attitude‐behavior (EMSP‐EMS) link demonstrate the need for new conceptualizations in this area. Finally, the conclusions of this review are presented in summary.

摘要:
AbstractThe factors related to the occurrence of extramarital coitus (EMC) among persons whose marriages terminate in separation or divorce and the impact of participation in EMC on postmarital adjustment were examined. It was hypothesized that premarital coital experience, quality of marital sex, length of marriage, religiosity, and physical attractiveness would affect the occurrence of EMC. Additionally, tests were performed to assess whether participation in EMC increased, decreased, or had no effect on postmarital adjustment. The data are from a study of 205 individuals, separated no longer than 26 months, who completed in‐depth, face‐to‐face interviews about their marriage, its failure, and its aftermath. Most respondents who experienced EMC report that it was an effect, rather than a cause, of marital problems. Yet respondents tend to report that theirspouse'sinfidelity was a cause of marital problems. Guilt is a significant by‐product of EMC for men and women, but men experience somewhat less guilt. Guilt is inversely related to satisfaction with EMC. Women report a significantly greater emotional involvement with their extramarital partners than men. Females who blamed their spouse or another person for the breakup of their marriage were significantly less likely to have had EMC, but no such relationship was found among males. Religiosity does not predict EMC, but among those who have had EMC, religiosity is positively related to how long after marriage EMC first occurred. There is no relationship between the presence or absence of EMC and marital quality at time of separation. Furthermore, EMC does not appear to be related to postmarital adjustment. Other variables such as marital quality, lifestyle attitudes, perceived consequences of EMC, perceived responsibility for family members, and perception of opportunity to engage in EMC need to be studied to further elucidate the occurrence of extramarital relationships.

摘要:
AbstractThe effect of nitrous oxide and naloxone, alone and in combination, on female orgasm was investigated. Nitrous oxide enhanced sexual fantasy, whereas naloxone dose—dependency given immediately prior to orgasm—either heightened or diminished sexual pleasure. The bimodal pattern suggests the possibility that the same dual biological system which mediates pain perception may also mediate orgasm. The possible use of nitrous oxide analgesia, with or without naloxone, as a diagnostic, experimental, and therapeutic tool is discussed.

摘要:
AbstractPast research suggests that lesbians may be more sexually responsive and sexually satisfied than heterosexual women. In order to clarify the similarities and differences between lesbians and heterosexual women, questionnaire responses of sexual arousability preferences and ratings of sexual behavior and satisfaction of 407 lesbians and 370 heterosexual women were compared. Both groups consisted primarily of Caucasian, college‐educated, young women. The mean score on the Sexual Arousability Inventory was significantly higher for the lesbian sample than for the sample of heterosexual women. A discriminant analysis of the SAI questionnaire items was also significant in separating the heterosexual from the lesbian sample. Chi‐square analyses determined that, compared to heterosexual women, the lesbians reported having sex more often, reported more frequent orgasms through masturbation and through other means of stimulation, and reported both more sexual satisfaction and a greater number of partners. However, when the underlying dimensions of sexual arousability were considered in a factor analysis, there were more similarities between the two groups than differences. Several hypotheses, including gender empathy, women's socialization to self‐disclose and communicate, and method of orgasm, were considered in accounting for the more satisfying sex life reported by lesbians.

摘要:
AbstractThis study was directed toward testing a major component of the feminist explanation for rape: that such criminal behavior is most fundamentally the result of traditions of male domination in most sociopolitical and economic affairs. The rape rates of 26 large American cities were compared, using both official FBI and victimization statistics, relative to various indicators of these cities' degree of sociopolitical and economic inequalities between the sexes. Four out of 14 correlations were significant, three with a sign opposite to that predicted by the feminist explanation. When presumed effects of the two strongest control variables were removed, using partial correlation techniques, only one coefficient was significant, and it was in the direction contrary to the feminist explanation. Generally, rape rates in American cities appear to be unrelated to sex disparities in earnings, education, occupational prestige, or employment. Thus, the belief that reducing average sex disparities in sociopolitical and economic terms will ameliorate a community's rape problem was not supported.

摘要:
Despite the suspected large numbers of bisexually oriented people, there has been almost no research on bisexuality. More important, the research on homosexuality is thoroughly confounded by the inclusion of large numbers of bisexuals as homosexuals, making that research difficult to interpret. The few studies of bisexuals that have been done are reviewed in this paper. Comparisons show that bisexuals often significantly differ from homosexuals and heterosexuals. Therefore, the practice of combining bisexuals with homosexuals in studies of homosexuals should be discontinued. Comparison studies of bisexuals, heterosexuals, and homosexuals are recommended.
