AbstractThe researchers set out to obtain self‐reports of individual's orgasm reactions in an attempt to discover whether individuals discriminate between orgasms in qualitative terms using consistent physically identifiable parameters of differentiability such that one can talk about‘types’of orgasm. Respondents were asked whether they considered themselves to have a single type of climax or to have several different types, and were asked to describe their physical reactions as fully as they could. By indicating two classes of myotonic responses, one involving body rigidification, the other pelvic movement, respondents indicated two mutually incompatible reactions, each with its own quantitative variability. This suggests the following heuristic research framework: that an increase in orgasmic response leads to an increase in myotonia, but myotonia may be of two types, involuntary nonmovement, i.e. a locking the body during the genital spasms or involuntary body movement, i.e. pelvic‐thrusting and/or folding‐at‐the‐waist.

AbstractOne particular form of extramarital sexual behavior, mate‐swapping or swinging, has received much attention in the popular and social scientific literature recently. One question not yet adequately answered is whether mate‐swapping is harmful or helpful to marital and family stability. The hypothesis that mate‐swapping is potentially less harmful to the stability of a marriage (and family) than a secret extramarital affair is discussed using two sources of data—several participant observation studies of swingers and survey research involving a stratified area probability sample of 579 married adults in a midwestern community. Infidelity, marital cohesion and family solidarity are examined using both descriptive and survey data. The tentative evidence provided does not suggest that mate‐swapping is harmful to marital or family stability.

AbstractThe premarital sexual experience of 161 couples still married to each other after twenty years is reported and answers are sought to the following questions: What is the effect of premarital sexual experience on subsequent marriage? Does the degree of premarital intimacy make any difference in the subsequent marriage? How do couples with premarital sexual experience evaluate it after twenty years of marriage? The findings show no evidence to support the hypothesis that increasing degrees of premarital intimacy will have increasingly detrimental effects upon later marriage.

AbstractThe clinical case presented gives insight into the dynamics of a professional pornographer, unconscious guilt feelings and the anticipation of psychic disaster as the defense against such guilt, expressed in the man's work. While no generalisation is intended, this case reflects unconscious motivations and unresolved conflicts that may have parallels in the make‐up of other producers of pornography.

AbstractA 5 item sexual permissiveness scale devised by Reiss, and 4 personality inventory scales purporting to measure psychoticism (P), neuroticism (N), extraversion (E) and propensity to dissimulate (L for lie scale) were administered to 427 male and 436 female subjects aged between 20 and 50 years. It was found that men were more permissive than women on all 5 items; that items are intercorrelated in a pattern which could be predicted from the Guttman‐type properties of the original scale; that high P scorers were more permissive than low P scorers; that high L scorers were less permissive than low L scorers; and that extraverts were slightly more permissive than introverts. All the findings relating to personality and permissiveness were in good agreement with findings from previous studies of the relation between personality and sexual attitudes. Assortative mating was studied for 241 couples who formed part of the original sample. Correlations for permissiveness were all positive, and reached significance for all but one of the scales. For the personality scales, assortative mating was found to be important only for neuroticism, a finding in agreement with previous studies.

AbstractThis study examines several factors affecting reactions to persons identified as homosexual. Reactions are operationalized in terms of expressed rejection of the homosexual as indicated by responses to a social distance scale. The major variables examined are sex of homosexual, sex of reactor, and acceptance of two commonly held stereotypes. These stereotypes—perceived danger and psychological disturbance—both suggest that a sense of threat is associated with rejection of the homosexual. A particularly interesting finding was that male subjects are especially rejecting of male homosexuals. Presumably male subjects tend to view the male homosexual as a sexual failure and to perceive him as personally threatening or dangerous.

AbstractA popular misconception often places the blame for syphilis on the American Indian. In truth, no one race or subspecies of Man is responsible for this venereal malady. Syphilis has been a part of Man's cultural heritage and physical past since early prehistoric times but scientists are just beginning to realize the past record of the disease. Three theories are discussed.
